Pee Wee play in Brussels Friday night. The smaller size of the Brussels players didn’t deter them as they outhustled and outchecked their larger opponents for the win. Todd Machan gave Brussels a lead midway through the first with Brad Beuermann assisting. Seconds into the second period Greg Fritz increased the lead with Tim Mach­ Mixed results for Blyth Atoms' week BY RUSTY BLADES A correction from Blyth’s 9-1 win over Elma-Logan had Rob Johnston scoring his first goal for the team. The referee had Scott Arthur deflecting the shot but Scott insists Rob’s shot was so hard that he never even saw the puck until it was in the net. Credit Rob for this cannonading point blast. The Blyth Atoms hosted Zurich last Wednesday, January 11 and hung on in typically Blyth fashion to win 7-5. Blyth built a 3-1 first period lead, with Brian McNichol opening the scoring assisted by Jason Rutledge. Christopher How- son made it 2-1 with 36 seconds left in the first with help from Ryan Chamney and Jason Rutledge. The team increased the lead with only 14 seconds left as Ryan Chamney snared a loose puck in the crease with assists to Henry Bos and Christopher Howson. Jason Rut­ ledge and Brian McNichol teamed up for a goal early in the second frame as Brian fooled the goalie with an unbelievable slapshot. Ryan Chamney then upped the count to 5-1 as Jonathan Collins point shot was tipped to Ryan at the edge of the crease by Christopher Howson. Zurich once again stormed back as they scored three straight goals to close to 5-4 early in the third. Blyth held their own the rest of the way as Brian McNichol completed his hat-trick with a bullet to the top corner after some heads-up passing from Jason Rutledge and Rob Johnston. Ryan Chamney then completed his hat-trick as he was Brussels Atoms win big in Goderich Brussels Houseleague Atoms brought home a big 7-2 win from their trip to Goderich Sunday. The teams took a while getting going but then did plenty of scoring. Peter Wall, with an assist from Troy Williams started the scoring with 3:46 remaining in the first period to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. Goderich replied before the period ended to knot the score. Midway through the second period Gene Johnston put Brussels ahead to stay with assists from Shawn Johnston and Jeff Elliott. Troy Williams added to the lead with 1:33 left when he scored from Gene Johnston and Jeff Elliott. Then with just 51 seconds left in the period Shane Wilson made it 4-1 when he scored from Jeff Elliott and Geoff Dalton. Goderich came back with one goal with 4:46 left in the third period but Brussels ended any suspense with three straight goals. Geoff Dalton started things off with an assist from Shane Wilson. Next Shane Wilson scored his second of the game with an assist from Dylan Hutchins Finally Shawn completed the scoring with just 23 seconds left in the game. an and Matt Lee assisting. Blyth struck back for one goal but Brussels quickly increased the lead again. Tim Machan scored from Matt Lee just seconds after the Blyth goal then Trevor Machan scored an unassisted goal. Blyth came back with one goal before the period ended to close the score to 4-2. With just 3:45 left in the game Blyth scored to set up an interest­ ing final but 40 seconds later Matt Lee salted the game away with an unassisted goal. spotted alone in front of the Zurich net by Tim Cowan. Zurich scored late but Blyth skated away with another penalty-free game in this 7-5 win. The Atoms took their show on the road last Thursday, January 12 as they suffered a shady 6-4 loss.
