Health service marks anniversary Para-Med Health Services has been helping to keep Huron County seniors and disabled adults out of institutions in their own homes for one year, and will celebrate its first anniversary with an Open House at its local branch office at 21 East Street in Goderich on Friday. Branch Manager Sandy David son says she hopes people will take advantage of the occasion to drop in to learn more about one of the county’s newest home and health care services. Para-Med Health Services is the home care division of the private Canadian company Extendicare, which ope^qtes nursing homes across the nation. Para-Med also has branches across Canada which, like the Goderich branch, provide home care for their clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When Para-Med first came to Huron County it provided only homemakers, or home support workers as Mrs. Davidson prefers to call them. But it has since added registered nurses, registered nurs ing assistants and health care aides to its staff to provide for a wide range of the needs of its 12b clients. Home support workers provide such services as personal care, housekeeping, meal prepara tion, running errands and compan ionship to their clients, while other personnel can provide varying levels of health care in their clients’ homes, and in some cases, in institutions such as nursing homes. “We differ from (Huron Coun ty’s better-known) Town and Coun try Homemakers only in that we try to provide a wider range of services to our clients, homemaking being Blyth People Nora Kelly and Lloyd Walden had the high scores at the weekly Lost Heir card party held Wednes day night at Memorial Hall. Winnie Vincent and Edgar only one of them,’’ Mrs. Davidson says. The Huron County Home Care Program is the largest purchaser of Para-Med’s services, Mrs. David son says, while about one third of its clients come in through the private sector. The company’s head office was recently involved in the rally at Queen’s Park at which several hundred not-for-profit homemaker services, including Wingham’s Town and Country Homemakers, Continued on page 7 Howatt had the low scores. Lorenzo Ramirez based his sermon on “Discipleship: a total commitment, a full surrender’’ on the story of the nobleman who prepared a feast and whose guests made various excuses for not attending as told in Luke 14: 15-33. He said that our lives today are very complicated - that discipleship can be scary - even being a Christian can be scary. He listed the three excuses given: First we all want to care for what’s ours. This is a symbol of security. The second was a symbol of power - and the third a symbol of personal commitment. But “Jesus” he said “wants our relationship with Him to be greater than any human relationship”. This means that our loyalty to Christ must come first.” Donna Walsh was pianist for the service. The choir sang “Under His Wings”. Diane Ferguson was in charge of the Junior Congregation while Anita Bromley was in the nursery.
