The Minister's Study
Christians must celebrate the love of God
BY REV. CHARLES CARPENTIER
BRUSSELS AND ETHEL
UNITED CHURCHES
A pastor whowas preachingon the
Day of Final Judgement, compared
that day with a nuclear holocaust.
“Rivers will overflow, and thunder
will boom’’ he cried out. “Flames
will shoot down from heaven!’’ he
shouted. “And darkness will fall like
a mushroom cloud over the earth.’’
Whereupon a small boy in the
congregation nudged his father and
asked, “Daddy, do you think they’ll

Grey Township Council held its
first meeting of 1989 on January 2.
Council passed several by-laws
including a by-law to authorize the
borrowing, if required, of $400,000
for 1989. A by-law was also passed
which doubled the basic dog tag fee
from $5.00 to $10.00. The basic fee
had not been increasesd since 1989
and Council felt the increase was
enough to cover the increased costs
of the last 10 years.
Appointments were also made to
the following local boards and
committees: Maitland Valley Con
servation Authority, Leona Arm
strong; Huron County Farm &
Safety Association, Robin Dunbar;
Brussels Medical-Dental Centre
Board, Dale Newman and Fred
Uhler; Brussels, Morris and Grey
Joint Board of Recreation Manage
ment, Dale Newman, Dale Machan,
Alvin McLellan and Leo Deitner;
Brussels, Morris and Grey Indus
trial Committee, Graeme MacDon
ald and Max Demaray.
Council also authorized for pay
ment of general accounts totalling
$50,687.72, road accounts totalling
$89,260.67and drain accounts totall
ing $9,164.47.

Somehow, the preacher wasn ’t
coming through to that young lad in
the way he had hoped. The boy was
missing the point. This can happen
to all of us, if we go to church week
after week without much serious
reflection on why we do this. We can
begin to miss the point of it all, if we
can not explain why we celebrate
that “love” every Sunday morning.
This is as serious a problem in
today’s church as it has been from
the very beginning. Christianity is a
matter of trust. Trust in God. Is this

old hat, flat beer? “Trust in God.”
We have heard it all too often. It has
lost his bite. If we could only give it
TV life: commercialize it. For
example, sit Jesus down at a
Jerusalem cottage, a smoking gas
barbecue loaded with “Hot Dogs”,
and have the 12 disciples playing
volleyball with their girlfriends,
harmonizing a jingle: ‘This God’s for
you!’. Perhaps we can come clbse.
Because, let us be honest for a
moment and ask this: “Does God,
does Jesus Christ, still make sense
today, against the background
suffering, earthquakes, starving
children, refugees, and against the
immoral behaviour of some well
known Christian Church leaders,
and again st the decline in Church
attendance? We who believe in a
Judaeo-Christian God, have a God
given right to ask these questions.
Because if we do not face these

From your answer you should
learn a good deal about yourself ...
how convinced and passionate a
