MUSEUMS CLINTON’S HISTORIC SCHOOL-ON-WHEELS The School-On-Wheels rail car in Sloman Park near the Bayfield River in the south end of Clinton shows graphically the life Fred and Cela Sloman and their family lived as the Slomans spent more than 40 years teaching children in northern Ontario from this railway car-turned-portable school house. Until Labour Day open 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday; weekends and holidays, 11 a.m. Spring and fall, and for tours by groups call 482-9583 (as long as the weather is warm). HURON HISTORIC JAIL One of the oldest buildings in the county, the J ail was built of stone THE CITIZEN NUMBERS BOOK. PAGE 29. quarried from the Maitland River between 1839and 1842. The top floor was assigned as a court room and housed the first meetings of county council. The jail was famous for housing such prisoners as James Donnelly of the Black Donnellys and Steven Truscott. HURON COUNTY MARINE MUSEUM Located at the south side of the Goderich Harbour the Marine Museum is located in the pilot house and captain’s quarters of the S.S. Shelter Bay, originally built in 1907. It gives a knowledge of life on a Great Lakes ship. It’s open Victoria Day to Labour Day, 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phone 524-2686. HURON COUNTY MUSEUM The museum is famous for its collection of artifacts from early rural and small town life. With the completion of the new $4.2 million addition this year, the museum can now be open year round. Dramatic new display areas are now being built in the new part of the museum while the old 1856 school house, the original museum, has been renovated. Admission $2 for adults. $1.50 for students and $1 for children (family rate $5). May 1 to Labour Day the museum is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday 1 - 4:30 p.m. After Labour Day 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, closed Saturday and open 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Phone 524-2686. WINGHAM AND DISTRICT MUSEUM The museum was founded to house the wildlife collection of George Allen. Now contains artifacts of the development of the north Huron area around Wingham. A special gallery honouring “Doc” Cruickshank, founder of CKNX Radio and Television was recently opened. Open until Labour Day 9 -12 and 1 - 5 Monday to Saturday. HURON COUNTY ARCHIVES Located in the Huron County Pioneer Museum the archives houses massive volumes of information on the history of the county from school records and assessment rolls to early maps and historical books.
