Phone 887-9487 Belgrave rings in year at community party The eighth Belgrave and Comm­ unity New Year’s Eve party was held in the Women’s Institute Hall, Saturday, December 31. Eleven tablesofeuchrewere in play with prizes going to: Mrs. Jean Plaetzer, high lady; Mrs. Olive Bolt, second high and Mrs. Doris Michie, low; high man, Leslie Vincent; second high, Bill Coultes and low, Harold Vincent. Les Shaw provided the music for dancing. Spot dance prizes went to Les and Hilda Vincent, Gordon and Bernice Gross and Lawrence and Jean Plaetzer. Door prizes donated Annual carol service presented at Knox A prelude of familiar Christmas numbers play °d by pianist, Mrs. Douglas (Sheila Anderson) Cousins and festival decorations set an inspiring welcoming atmosphere in Knox United Church, Belgrave, Saturday evening, December 24, for the Annual Carol Service. A capacity congregation attend­ ed, which included members from Knox and Calvin-Brick and neigh­ bouring churches, accompanied by their families, relatives and friends. The Order of Service pamphlets were distributed by Kenneth Proc­ ter, John R. Taylor, who also were the ushering stewards. Following theCall toWorshipand the Prayer of Approach by the Rev. John G. Roberts, the Junior and Senior Pee Wees lose 2 games The Belgrave Pee Wee team visited Blyth on Monday, December 19 and came up on the losing end of a 4-2 score. Brad Robinson scored from Doug Wilson to give Belgrave the early lead but the team trailed 2-1 after the first period. Doug Wilson then tied the game in the second assisted by Brad and Mark Robinson. Blyth scored two goals in the third to clinch the win. Thursday, December 22, Seaforth skated away with a 6-3 win. Seaforth took an early 2 0 lead before Tim Coultes scored on a pass from Mark Olson to complete the first period. Seaforth then led 4-1 when Mark Robinson scored from Corey Moran. In the third period Brent Robinson scored from Olson to complete the scoring for Belgrave. Belgrave is playing in a league consisting of Blyth, Seaforth, Elma Logan, Brussels and Zurich. The team is 3-7 in league action. Members of the team are Mike Golley, Tim Coultes, Mark Olson, Brad Robinson, Kyle Moran, Bran­ don Coultes, Mark Robinson, Peter Gusso, Doug Wilson, Aaron Coul­ tes, Brent Robinson, and Corey Moran. Belgrave holiday visitors Christmas visitors with Mr. and Mrs. George Michie were Dr. and Mrs. Donald Whitfield, Jenny and Jeff of Sault Ste. Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Norman MacLennan, Carissa, Adam, Luke and Brittany of Lis- towel. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Leitch, Julie and Jeff of Waterdown, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston, Tara and Erin of Ilderton, Mrs. Laura John­ ston of Belgrave were Christmas by Mrs. Phyllis Mitchell were won by Mrs. Ruth Johnston, George Michie, Alex and Jean Nethery. Everyone joined in a circle to welcome in the New Year singing Auld Lang Syne with Mrs. Freda Johnston playing the piano. The noise of breaking balloons which had been decorating the hall added to the occasion. Grace was sung and a delicious pot luck meal was enjoyed by all. George Michie agreed to be in charge for the 1989 party decided by those present to be held on Saturday evening, December 30 instead of New Year’s Eve. choirs entered to the processional hymn, “O Come All Ye Faithful”. During the Responsive Reading, as the congregation stood, the minister lit the Christmas Advent candle. From that point the service followed the Order without interruption. The junior choir sang, “Welcom­ ed the Babe’’, the senior chose “Holy Night”, as their contribution with organist accompanist, Mrs. George Procter. The same air of Christmas pervaded the sanctuary for the Christmas morning service. Vocal soloist, Mrs. Juanita Arkell sang “Lo, How a Rose e’er Blooming”, the choir rendered ‘ ‘Angels from the Realms of Glory”, as their anthem. Mrs. George Procter, organist, accompanied all musical numbers. Rev. Roberts spoke briefly on passages of scripture from He­ brews, St. John and Galatians. He stated ‘ ‘Jesus is the Revealer of what God is like.” Jesus relates God’s intentions for us - to be saved to External Life. Jesus changed man’s status from Slave to Heir, one of God’s children. He concluded, “This, we celebrate today, Decem- br 25, in the birth of Christ.” Tykes take 2 wins BelgraveTykes played against Wingham in Blyth, December 10. Belgrave came away with a 9-4 win. Brian Sinclair scored once and Peter Irwin netted eight goals. December 17, BelgraveTykes journeyed to Hensall. Belgrave played another good game. Tom Pfieffer, in goal, got his first shut-out. Peter Irwin and Brian Sinclair both scored twice for Belgrave. Final score Belgrave 4, Hensall 0. Belgrave Novice played Blyth December 14 in Blyth. Blyth con­ trolled much of the play and won 5-3. Jeremy Campbell, scored one goal, assisted by David McBurney and David McBurney scored twice for Belgrave. weekenu visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grasby. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Ball, Matthew and Alicia of Hanover, Mr. and Mrs. Rob Roy and Christina of Peter­ borough, Mr. and Mrs. Doug CousinsofWoodstock, Mr. andMrs. Richard Anderson of Goderich were home for the Christmas holidays with their parents Mr. andMrs. Ross Anderson. All had Christmas dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Les Shaw on Boxing Day. Jack Wickstead of RR 5, Brussels received a telephone call from England informing him that his oldest sister, Miss Selena Wick­ stead, who had visited Jack in Ontario in 1964, had passed away on December 29, 1988 in her 102nd year. Neighbours and friends of this community extend sympathy to Jack Wickstead in the loss of his sister Selena. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vincent held a family dinner Christmas Day. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Vincent, Patrick, Angela and Aaron of Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. Murray Vincent, Dean, Jayne and Vaughn of RR 1, Belgrave; Mr. and Mrs.NeilVincentofRR3, Wingham and Mr. and Mrs. Grant Vincent, Cole and Garitt of Belgrave. The Campbells held their family get-together at the Belgrave W.I. Hall. A pot luck dinner was enjoyed by all. Those attending were from London, Kincardine, Seaforth, Blyth, Wingham and the Belgrave area. Visitors at the home of Mrs. Olive Campbell and Mrs. Ivy Cloakey over New Year’s Day weekend were: Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Campbell and Heather of Ancaster; and Mr. and Mrs. John Galbraith, Michael and Kelly of Whitby. Mrs. Al MacDon­ ald and Adam of Wingham visited at the same home on Wednesday. Jodi Riley of Dungannon, grand­ daughter of Mrs. Florence Black, is a patient in University Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. John Leppington, Aaron, Adam and Sara of Clinton held Christmas for the Bieman families on Wednesday, December 28. Bieman of Belgrave. Barbara Coultes spent Christmas week with her mother Mrs. Janisa Coultes. Returning to their home later they visited with friends in Sarnia. Mrs. Margaret Dunbar returned home Wednesday, December 28 after spending a few days with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dunbar of Stratford. On Christmas Day they all were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Lockhardt, Stratford. Miss Mae Coulter of Aylmer spent a few days at Christmas time, with Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Walsh and also visited with other relatives. A family Christmas dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wightman was held on Monday, December 26 in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave. Those Knox Sunday concert presented Family, relatives and friends packed the W.I. Hall and enjoyed an entertaining evening while the members of Knox UnitedChurch Sunday School presented their concert on December 20,1988 at 7:30 Thekindergarten class opened the concert by singing “He’ll be coming down the chimney when he comes”, “Jingle Bells” and We wishyou a Merry Christmas”. “The Meaning of Christmas” was presen­ ted by Grade one followed by Grade two’s presentation of “Christmas Is”. Grade three told about the “Friendly Beasts”. The audience enjoyed the humourous presentation of “Christ­ mas Pudding” by Grade Four. “Mary’s Bov Child” was put to Preparation for KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION in Huron County Board of Education Elementary Schools is being made. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Speakman, Logan and Tyler of Pickering alsovisited at the same home. Sunday guests with Rev. Charles Speakman were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smithson, Johnathan and Daniel of Markham. Mrs. Elizabeth Procter and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Procter and family visited Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Louis Van Ammerson and family of Kitchener and Mrs. Betty Kelly, Blyth. Mrs. Kelly returned home with Mrs. Procter and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Procter and family on Monday, December 19. Dr. Ronald Taylor of St. John’s, Newfoundland is spending the Christmas holidays with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor and other relatives. School musicby the Grade Five class. Grade Six did a presentation on “Light of the World” explaining that Jesus is the light of the World. Superb acting of Clifford Coultes, Debbie Hopper, Margaret Cook, Mary Cook and Connie Kuc provided great entertainment in their skit. Alicia Potter closed the program with her recitation “It’s Over.” Rev. John Roberts lead in the singing of “Here Comes Santa Claus” while the children eagerly awaited the arrival of Santa Claus. Santa arrived and distributed gifts and bags of candy to the children. It was evident that the concert was enjoyed by all and that the children will have many memories of the evening.
