From the Minister's Study The wonderful truths of Christmas are for every day BY DONALD VAIR Christmas Day has come and gone, but the wonderful truths of Christmas are for each and every day for the New Year. Maybe nqw with the tree down and the turkey eaten, and the colourful trappings of Christmas thatwesoenjoy put away, we can take a better look at this blessed event which must be faced sooner or later by all people, everywhere. The carol “Silent Night’’ says “Christ the Saviour is born’’. What happened in Bethlehem that glori ous day was in fulfilment in meticulous detail of ancient pro phecies. Isaiah for example, pro phesied by the Holy Spirit that Jesus was born of a virgin. Matthew and Luke record the fulfilment of this specific vital detail. Micah was lead to prophesy that Jesus would be born in an abscure little place called Bethlehem. In fact, Christ was born to the very day prophesied by ancient men appointed by God to do so. The Lord Jesus Christ did not begin His existence in Bethlehem’s manger, for He existed before. He alwayswas. Micah said “Whose goings faith have been from old, from everlasting.’’ John’s gospel records Jesus in conversation with unbelieving Jews in which He informed them that He existed before their father Abra ham. King David 1000 years B.C. in Psalms 110, calls Jesus his Lord. See Matthew 22:44 for Jesus Christ’s quotation of David’s declaration. Jesus Christ not only existed before - from everlasting, “He was and is God.’’ “Hark The Herald Angels Sing’’ says “veiled in flesh the God-head Melville Guild holds Christmas meeting An enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Kathleen Semple when the Guild of Melville Church, Brussels, met for their December meeting. Jeanne Ireland and Kathleen Semple were in charge of the devotions. They commenced with a quiz “What is Christmas’’. The answer was “Christmas is Love”. The carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was sung, followed by the scripture reading Matthew 1, verses 18 to 25. After singing ‘ ‘ Away in a Manger’’, Jeanne gave the message “The First Christmas’ ’ and “The Holy Family”. Kathleen led in prayer. Jeanne had some Christmas trivia - the dates and reasons for the following being connected with Christmas: the holly, candles, cards, religious days, Christmas trees, advent calendar, poinsettias, Santa Claus and the first Carol. Each member then took part in the “A, B, C’s” of Christmas. After singing four more Christmas carols, the Mizpah Benediction was repeat ed, bringing this part of the meeting to a close. Jean Bewley presided for the business. She thanked the commit tee for their programme and Kath leen for inviting us to her home. The minutes of the November meeting were read by the secretary, Eluned McNair. She also read cards receiv ed from shut-ins, for poinsettias given them. Jeanne Ireland gave the treasurer’s report. There was some discussion about drug and alcohol concern after a letter concerning both was read. Jean announced that Margaret Work will be president next year. Jean and Margaret spoke briefly. The Guild will hold their pot luck supper on January 17 at 6:30 p.m. Eluned and Leona will be in charge of the meeting. see, hail the incarnate deity, pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel.” Immanuel literally means “God with us”. “Once in Royal David’s City” declares “He came down to earth from Heaven who is God and Lord of all.” Isaiah says He is the mighty God and everlasting Father. As General Albert Orsborn of the Salvation Army said “There is a clear connection between the cradle and the cross. Surely the virgin birth and atoning Saviour are indissolubly connected. We were born to live. Christ was born to die for my sin, your sin and the sin of the whole world. How can I possess the gift of God which is eternal life? Jesus said in Mark’s gospel “repent and believe the gospel.” How do I do that? I do that by admitting I am a sinner in God’s sight, and I simply turn from my sin andselftoChrist; inviting Him to come into my heart of hearts, to be my Saviour and Lord. The Lord Jesus Christ said in Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voiceand open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him and he with me.” If you have done this my friend, you have made the best start on 1989 anyone could possibly make. A happy and blessed New Year to all.
