LINE BOWLING AND SHADOW
BOWLING.
Of all the different ways there
are to aim a bowling ball, the "Line
bowling" method is the hardest to
descrifie exactly. Using it success-
fully depends partly on your own
imagination, and partly on a trick
of perspective.
Standing at the end of the bowl-
ing lane, looking down the lane,
you'll notice the boards, and the
cracks betWeen them, seem to taper
together as they approach the pins
at the far end.
In. "line bowling" you imagine;
these cracks and boards as a sort
of channel, 'funnelling down to the
h.eadpin. When you deliver the
ball, you launch it as smoothly e's -
possible down that imaginary than_:
nel.
On every lane you'll find the col-
or;' of the hardwood boards vary
from strip to strip. Experiment'
until you find the particular strips
on that lane that mark a channel
;leading your ball naturally each
time to the target pin,
In "pin howling" you fix your
eyes 'on the pin, then concentrate
on sending your ball along an im-
aginary line between your hand and
that pin. In'"line bowling" you fix
your eyes on the "line" in the lane,
then launch your ball along it to
reach the pin. We don..t recom-
mend line bowling because we feel
it is a very inaccurate method of
aiming,
r. Shadow Bowling
To understand "shadow bowling",
once. again look down the lane. This
time, -notice how the. shadows of
the pins are reflected on, the sur-
face of the lanes. No matter where
you stand on, the approach, the in-
flections seem to point directly to-
ward you. What's more, they tap-
er together toward a natural point.
Shadow Bowling is a misnomer.
The bowler actually uses lite. re-
flection of the pins to guide his
ball,
If you aim at the head of the
shadow, with a straight ball, it
will roll down the shadow and
strike the pin. • As the point you
are now aiming at is about 10 feet
closer to you than the pins them-

The Hydro team had a real bat-.

night with Burkes right after that

The first game ended in a tie,
which caused sortie real excitement

selves, you have a better chance of
hitting it accurately.
If you find you are missing your
target pin Slightly after rolling
through the shadow, vary your
aiming point a little--bowl for the
neck of the shadow instead of the
tip;, or else aim for the gap be-
tween two shadows.
The big advantage in using the
shadows is that it moves your tar-
get closer to you -and gives you
a larger aiming area. However,
very few expert bowlers use this
system, and we certainly don't feel
it's a good system for beginners,
However, if you have already tried
all the other systems—pin bowling
and spot -bowling—without success,
then experiment with shadow, bow-
ling.
Shadow howling does have -a
couple of special advantages. If
you ordinarily aim right at the
pins, but find you are "picking"
headpins too often, bowling fcir the
shadow as a target will usually
cause your ball to "break" off line
a bit sooner, and thus strike the
ileadpin off centre.
If you find trouble hitting corner
pins, shadow bowling sometimes
helps here. The corner pin shad-
ows extend up into the alley away
from the -gutter. If you bowl
straight down to the top of the
shadow, you will 'find it helps keep
the ball out of the gutter and in a
truer line •to the target.

ing.

No floor show last week but a
lot of real good bowling resulting
in several nice scores. Only the
top scorers are named in the week-
ly report, but there are always
some scores only a few points from
the 'top.
A little shifting in positions last
week, but all teams very much in
the race. Shirley Storey took the
ladies' high -single with 239 while
Ruth Lott had the triple with 603.
Gary Storey was a bit selfish and
took both 'high single and triple
for the men, with 273 and 697.

COIN NOTES
By jack Dietrich
Box 28, Clinton
This week I would like to' dis-
cuss the large Canadian nickel
which first came out in 1922. They
had one basic design the big five)
land' the end of 1936. Then in 1937
the beaver design was inaugurated.
In 1943, 1944 and 1945 the "V" and
torch "victory" motif saw service
to give boost to the war effort, In
1946 the beaver design returned and
is now characteristic of all Canad-
ian shekels.
The only commemorative iileltel
was, issued in 1951 and marked the
200th anniversary of the isolation of
the element nickel. Due to the
nickel shortage during the war,
some of the 1942 and all of the 1943
five cent pieces were struck in
Tombac, an alloy of 88 per cent
copper, with 12 per cent zinc on
12-sided planchets to minimize con-
fusion with bronze cents, The tom-
bacs were not too popular, so in
1944 and 1945 they were made of
steel and these proved even less
popular because they were extreme-
ly prone to rust and corrosion. In
1946 they reverted to pure nickel
again
This is a pleasant series to col-
lect, because most of them are re-
latively easy to come by except the
1925 of which only 201,921 were
minted. A considerable number
of the tombacs were returned to
the mint and the rest are being
hoarded or are in collectors' hands,
but they are still fairly easy to
come by.
In 1926 there was only 938,162
minted but you can still find one
if you look long enough. The 1.948
nickel is starting to become elus-
ive due to collectors taking them
out of circulation, so if you find
one, keep it for your collection,
The commemorative nickel of 1951
appears to be rare, but it isn't. Due
to some misleading rumors most
people think they.kre rare and are
hoarding them. There were 9,-
028,507 minted, so this hardly
makes them rare.
