This Saturday will see the open-
ing of a new bt ilding which is ex-
pected to fill a long-felt need in
the community. The Wingham Mo-
tel, which has been under construc-
tion since July, has been completed
Under the ownership of Norman J.
Welwood, who earlier this year sold
his variety store business to Monty
Bennett.
Ever since the destruction of the
Brunswick Hotel more than three
years ago by fire, there has been
a distinct need for more guest ac-
commodation in town and the open-
ing of this well-appointed motel
should attract many guests.
The Wingham Motel is situated
just south of the Johnston farm
on the east side of No. 4 Highway,
about ,a mile south of the town, and
when landscaping is completed in
the spring, will present a most at-
tractive appearance
The building, omen includes 12
guest units, as well as the office
and dwelling is 240 feet in length.
In front of and adjoining the up-
to date dwelling section, where Mr.
and Mrs. •Welwood and family will
reside, is a combined office and
breakfast. The proprietors, plan
to serve continental style break-
fasts to guests only.
The dwelling section is of franie

and brick veneer construction, The
motel itself was constructed , of
Durisol, an insulated building
block, and the walls are faced with.
fawn brick. Because electric heat
was planned from the beginning,
the latest and best methods of in.
sulation were employed. The foun-
dation walls are insulated to a
depth of 30 inches below the grade
level, and the roof is insulated with
6-inch rock wool bats.
Large Rooms
One of the most attractive tea,
tures of the motel itself is the size
of the guest rooms, which measure
approximately 15 by 18 feet. The
resulting spaciousness will certain.
ly be appreciated by those who arc
avenstomed to the cramped quar-
ters one Usually finds in motels.
141aell room has a four-piece bath,
and here again extra thought has
been given to the comfort of the
guests, for the bathrooms are larg-
er than urinal, and the wash basins
have been installed in glaze-topped
tables which leave enough room
for razors, tooth paste, and the
other odds and ends the traveller
must employ. In addition,- each
bathroom is equipped with a burnt-
stat,,an automatic fan device which
removes excess moisture from the
rooms when necessary.
Eight-inch masonry block 'parti-
tions separate the units, to assure
a minimum of disturbance 'from
noise, Windows have been, made
much larger than those required by
law in order -to provide .a maxi-
mum of cross-ventilation and to
provide lots of light and a realis-
tic living-roof effect. Each room
is equipped with television, and as
a final note of luxury colorul drap-
es enhance the windows -and broad-
loom carpeting covers the floors
from"wall to wall,
Modern Heating
The dwelling section will be
heated by an oil-fired Wingham
furnace, Electric heat was chosen
for the guest moms because of its
flexibility, A small control panel
in the office controls the heat for
each of the twelve, rooms, turning
the temperature back to a stand-by
55 degrees when the rooms are not
in use. A touch of the switch will
bring any room up to 72 degrees
within 10 or 15 minutes. Individual
thermostats in the rooms will -per-
mit the guests- to adjust the tem-
perature to their own preference.
Mr. Welweocl states that Ontario
Hydro experts wore -of great as-
sistance in planning the -construc-
tion and installation of the -electric
heat layout, Both Harry McAr-
thur and Matt Boyd, of Wingham,
spent many hours -checking the de-
tails of installation required for
this up•ktodate system.
Plans for the building were
- laid out by It, H. Lloyd and Norman
WelWeed,
Contractors Auld 'Suppliers
The construction of this building
required- 7400 masonry blocks, 10,.
non bricks, 1000 feet of various sizes
of copper pipe, 102 cubic yards of
concrete,v and 882 :square yards of
carpet. —

The Motel was planned and built ,
to provide more service for com-
