ROME GUTTED B FIRE—The residence of Arthur
Martin, adjacent to the community centre in the Vil-
lage of Fordwkit, was gutted. by fire of undetermined
origin.on Saturday afternoon, Members of the Wing-
ham and District Fire. Brigade are shown as they
fought the blaze'. Mr. Martin lost nearly $100.00 in
cash which was in a FA* pocket of clothing that was.

Was Choir Member
For Many Years
FORDWICH—A resident of How-
ick Township for 78 years, Mrs.
Isaac Gamble died suddenly at her
home in Fordwich on Tuesday,
August 22, when she suffered a
heart attack,
The former Mary Ellen Hain-
stock, daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Hainstock, she was
born in Howick March 12, 1883.
Her husband predeceased her in
1946.
Mrs. Gamble is survived by a
son, John, at home, and one daugh-
ter, Evelyn, (Mrs. Edward Harris)
'of 'Brownsville. There are also
three sisters, Mrs. D. S. (Myrtle)
MacNaughton, of Wingham; Mrs.
Ruby Forster, Fordwich ,and Mrs.
John Mow.att, of Milton, Ont., and
three grandchildren.
She was a member of Trinity
Anglican Church, where she had
been active in. the WA and Mission-
ary Society and had sung in the
choir for 50 years. She was also a
member of the LOBA. The mend:
hers of the lodge held a memorial,
service at the Moir funeral home
on Thursday evening.
Rev. John Ball, of 'Unionville,
and Rev, E. C. Attwell, Fordwich,
conducted the funeral service from
Trinity Anglican Church on Friday
afternoon and interment was in
Fordwich Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Robert

FORDWICH—The grand opening
of the Fordwich Bowling Lanes,
owned and operated by Pearl and
William Marriner, was a great
success on Friday afternoon and
evening. From grandfather to
grandchild all had a turn, at the
game. •
This is a good clean sport and
healthy exercise and should be an
added attracaion to the village. Mrs.
Martha Baker won the prize for the
oldest person present.
Miss Marie Browne is employed
for two weeks at Pinelands Grill.
Mrs. Anson Demerling and Mrs.
Joan Wilding visited a few days
last week with Mr. and Mrs. Gord-
on Goldrich in London,
Mrs. Nina 'Armstrong visited last
week with Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Davidson in Wingham.
Miss Elaine Craig, of Salem, is
spending two weeks with Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd Simmermaker,
Mrs. Percy Hainstock and daugh-
ter, Helen, of Toronto, spent sev-
eral days last week at the home
of Mrs. Elizabeth Hainstock and at-
tended the funeral on Friday of the
late Mrs. Nellie Gamble.

Louise Matthews spent one day last
week in London.

the funeral of the late Mrs. Percy
King in Mount Forest last week.

FORDWICII—The WI held the
Grandmothers' meeting in the com-
munity hall. Mrs. John Craig wel-
comed the ladies and gave a toast
to the grandmothers.
Mrs. Stanley Bride had charge
of devotions using as her theme
"You live as you think." Mrs. Cros-
by Sothern gave the motto, "Age
hath its experiences; youth has its
promises." Roll call was "Things
grandmother would have enjoyed."
Two ladies were appoitned for the
4-H girls project ,featuring fruits.
A donation of $5.00 was given to
Howick Agricultural Society. A
committee was named to look after
refinishing the stage floor and the
basenient of the hall.
Mrs. Harry Bast gave a reading
"My Grandmother's Cookbook."
A 'debate Was held "Grandmother
had more peace of mind than the
mothers of today." The judges were
Mrs, Howard Harris and Mrs.
Glare Harris. The negative side
won,
Mrs. Fred ThaMbly presented cor-
sages to Mrs. Nina Armstrong, the
oldest grandmother, and Mrs. Aus-
tin Stinson, the most recent grand
mother. Community singing closed
the meeting.
