THE THIRTEENTH APOSTLE
by Eugene Vale
is an intense,. humbling yet ex-
hilarating experience. It is a pow-
erful novel written with skill and
art. I know nothing of the writer
----I assume he is an American; and
I have not yet discovered whether
other writing of his has been pub-
lished or whether this is the first
book he has had printed.
The title, which intrigued me,
and the jacket design ,led me to
select the book, The jacket, colour-
ed the riven green of the jungle.
shows two tiny men on burros ad-
vancing through thick vegetation
towards the shining snowy peak of
a distant mountain. One is clad in
black, one in white. The artist has
portrayed well the lure of the
mountain peak, There are only four
chapters in this rather lengthy
book, all titled with Spanish-
sounding place names.
The tale begins in the consulate
of a tiny Central American port.
Puerto Carribas, Donald Webb, the
consul has become concerned over
the fate of an American painter,
Franz Crisnlan by name. They
have only met briefly but the im-
pact of the contact was etched
deeply in his memory, H e decides
to investigate and lives a lifetime
of retrospect and spiritual xper-,
lence in the process. He accepts the
offer of an itinerant priest as
guide. Padre Paola is a simple soul
imbued with faith firmer than all
reason. They irritate and yet in-
terest each other because the whole
basis of their separate lives is di-
ametrically opposed, Painstakingly
they follow Crispian's trail togeth,
cr. This seemingly insignificant
man had taught them both some-
thing and they were convinced that
he had still more to contribute.
At Crispian's urgent request
Webb had sent canvas and paints
inland, Eventually they discover,
that Crispian had mentally con-
ceived an unbelievably compre-
hensive painting of the Crucifixion
of Christ. From his written notes
they perceive unfolded there the
hopes, fears and differing beliefs
of humanity. When it is located a
great portion of the central panel
is torn out. Mona Barrie, the only
person who ever had loved ,Crisz
plan, says be was dissatisfied with
it and had moved farther up the
mountain for contemplation and
perfection of his masterpiece.
Webb and Padre Paolo conquer
El Soleclaci, the mountain, and they
find the answer to the riddle of
Crispian's disappearance. On the
perilous ascent Webb faces himself
--he realizes what he was and what
he had become. Mr, Vale gives us
a very revealing picture of the
pragmatic idealists that the colleges
developed between the two world
wars -Webb was one of them, Few
characters people the pages hut all
are limned with startling' clarity.
Besides the three we have already
met there is a brutal American
mining engineer, whose daughter
Mona I have airady mentioned.
Another most interesting character
is Don Hernandez, a Spanish pro-
fessor of comparative religions,
who also lives in this co,untry, hay-
