IN THE LIBRARY
By DORIS G. McKIBBON
Recently I have read -two novels
by the same author, namely
COMMAND THE MORNING
by Pearl Buck
and the older "Letter from Peking",
Frankly, I preferred the second
one. It dwelt upon those almost in-
tangible qualities of mind and
heart that make people real to me.
"Command the Morning" (isn't that
a majestic title?), however, will
be the more popular because
it will interest a greater number
of different types of people. As al-
ways, in both books, Pearl Buck
provides material well worth per-
usal.
This is a story full of excitement
and suspense, It takes place during
the Second World War and ends
with Hiroshima. Its principal char-
acters are scientists, a breed of
men apart. At this point in their
collective knowledge they are
haunted by a,- power just 'beyond
their reach — the unleashing and
control of the atom, In considerable
detail she recounts their experi-
ments and discussions, We see their
hopes and fears, sense their
scruples and desires. We follow
their wives and families as they
move from place to place; we
sympathize with •their loneliness as
they are kept on the fringes of the
men's lives 'because of the over-
whelming heed for secrecy,
The main characters are fictiti-
ous, but believable none the less.
We are caught up in their feverish
determination to harness this
power. We ate tortured by their
doubtful reluctance to loose the
forces of destruction, which could
mean the annihilation of this
planet, The writing it superb —
logical, sure and beautiful. The
facts are correct—the author read
Widely and talked with those Who
lived and worked at Oak Ridges,
Los Alamos and other atomic in.
stallations.
The climax I quote, that you may
taste the quality of the book:
"Over the city in Japan the plane
floated like a butterfly above an
open flower. It hovered like a fish
hawk above a silver pond in the
morning when the goldfish swarm
to the surface to catch the light of
the sun. It was a midsummer morn-
ing, the day's 'business just begun
. . . They lifted their faces and
saw a plane in the sky, a single
plane. They were reassured. One
plane, What damage could it do? .
"Unnoticed ,a silver thing fell out
of the plane and twisted down-
ward, a small thing in the sky, not
bigger than a toy, a glittering dot,
a piece torn from the sun. It was
in fact a piece of the sun, a globe
of fire, one third of a mile in di-
ameter, with a temperature in the
centre of one hundred million de-
grees 'Fahrenheit, compressed into
a small metal container. Suddenly
the container burst. The air around
it was forced away by the enor-
mous pressure and out of the fierce
violence winds arose at hundreds of
miles an hour, even a thousand, in
great waves. The mighty push, the
violent blast, set aflame everything
within its reach, Wood, cloth,
thatched roofs, great works of art,
and human flesh, blood, bone, and
brain. And following were the un-
seen rays of radiation. Of three
hundred thousand people in tie
city, a third 'were dead in one In-
stant, and of those remaining, most,
were burned, crippled and scarred
for life, the deep returning scars
boiling up out of their renewed
flesh. , , . A great silence fell upon
the earth..
Out of that silence conies the
question asked by God of lob, so
long ago: "Hest thou commanded
the morning?" And the questing
eyes Deering into the future see a
different reply to thd query then
unanswered.

REITER TRACTOR OPERATION
For quick tractor engine warm-
up and operating efficiency in the
winter, try covering the radiator
with a blanket or burlap bags, say
agricultural engineers with the
Ontario 'Department of Agriculture.
Remove the wrapping when the
engine becomes warm. To cut out
condensation in the fuel system
fill the fuel tank at night and run
the engine until the curburetor
is filled with fresh fuel.
