To the Editor,
The Advance-Times
Dear Sir:
The recent letter of Mr, Wel-
Wood regarding the Huron County
Airport is worthy of an answer,
and I, as a member of County
Council, will endeavour to the best
of my ability to do eth
Before going into any details let
ride assure idim that whether the
ownerehip of the Airport is retain-
ed by the County, or sold to an
Individual, it must be maintained
as an Airport for at least 25 yeare.
I believe it is the feeling of County
Council that an Airport is a valu-
able asset to the County and there-
fore with , the stipulation that it
must be operated as an Airport for
25' years, this asset is being re-
tained in the County. However,
as far as an individual site is con-
cerned, at the present time this is
impossible as the Department of
Transport will not permit any
additional contruction which in
any way would interfere with the
flightways. Therefore it could not
be "sacrificed to land developers
for sale at a fat Profit".
In regards to publicity County
Council sessions, I would like to
point out that under present ar-
rangements with the County papers,
prepared written committee re-
ports are forwarded after each
session to the local papers, Over
and above this, of course, dallies
with local distribution are. repre-
sented at County Council, and. also
CKNX carries news of events orig-
inating at the various sessions of
Council. Therefore we, as a County
Council, are endeavoring to inform
the people of what is going on.
The actual cost of the Airport
to the County was $39,000, less the
sale of a hangar for $18,000, leav-
ing $21,000. invested at the present.
Up until this year, the County had
no control over the amount of in-
surance to be carried as this was
laid down by the Department of
Transport. However, this con-
dition has changed now as we are
the owners of the property, and
instead of paying approximately
$2500. annually 4t will possibly be
reduced to less than $2000.
The revenue received up until
January of this year has amounted
to $1200. annually, but maintenance
expenditure amounted to 800. an-
nually (plus the above mentioned
insurance). As far as maintenance
of the field is concerned, this will
be governed by the Department of
Transport, as they must be satis-
fied with the condition of the field
in order to issue a license to
operate. same. From now on the
cost of this maintenance-is an unl
known quantity.
There is another thought. If the
County operated the Airport them-
selves, it would require a consider-
able staff and we would still be at
the mercy of our operator who
would have full knowledge of the
actual ways and means of operat-
ing an Airport, whereas members
of County Council in general do
not have this information.
Now, 411. addition to being re-
lieved of the extensive overhead in
connection with this property, the
local Township and County will
derive revenue by means of tax-
ation if owned by an individual,
Finally, this property at the
present will only be sold if a suit-
able tender is submitted.
Sincerely,
Joe Kerr,
Deputy Reeve of Wingham
