PARTS AND SERVICE FROM COAST TO COAST WING -HAM MOTO Phone 139 Wingham, .Ontario By C. A. Dean, M.D. MEDITORIAL: More and more states are cracking down on quack "doctors." These con men are actually thieves disguised as bonafide physicians who steal money from their victims. They are trained only in fast talk and convincing airs. Many do not even have a high school diploma, but surround themselves with fake degrees. Unfortunately, as soon as one bogus doctor is convicted of vio- lating medical practices and pure drug acts in one area, another springs up somewhere else. Two states have recently taken steps to protect themselves against these quacks by passing laws for- bidding untrained personnel to masquerade as physicians, Cali- fornia passed a law in June 1959 prohibiting the practice and pro- viding stiff penalties for lawbreak- ers. Texas requires all naturopaths to qualify for the practice of medi- cine before they can practice na, turopathy. This law was the result of a long drive (Operation Quack- Quack) to put the naturopaths and their fellow quacks out of busi- ness, Most states do not yet have sufficient laws to prosecute phony doctors. A Complaint is heeded from a victim and the pride of most victims keeps them from admitting they have been swin- dled. (Q) "Is there a medication to relieve itchy ears?"" B. L. S.
