ANNOUNCE RESULTS
ON ACCIDENT SURVEY
About one in every four farm
families in ,Canada is involved in a
farm, accident, and one in every
fifty is fatal.
This was indicated in a cross-
country farm accident survey—
taken for a year's period—which
has just been completed. Results
.are announced by J, S. Whyte,
chairman of the agriculture com-
mittee of The Canadian Chamber
of Commerce, and J. E. McArthur,
president of the Canadian Council
on 4-H Clubs.
In the period studied, according
to the survey, over 59 per cent of
all farm accidents involved under-
20 age groups. July is the most
"dangerous" month of the year and
accounted for 13 per 'cent of ac-
cidents. August was second, May
third. One put of every four ac
cidents involved farm machinery.
A female was involered in one out
of every five farm mishaps.
The survey was carried out by
the Canadian Council on 4-H
Clubs, the Provincial Departments
of Agriculture, The Canadian
Chamber-of Commerce, the Canada
Department of Agriculture, and
The Canadian Federation of Agri-
culture,
Mr. Whyte paid special tribute
to members of the 4-H Clubs for
the "important part they played
in' reporting, accidents to people
living on farms for the purposes of
this survey."

MED 'TO REGISTER
'With the co-operation of the
Ontario .• Rt•tall Pharmacists' As-
sociation, the Ontario Division of
The Canadian Arthritis and.
Rheumatism Society is planning a
province-wide survey to obtain a
more accurate estimate of the ex-
tent of the arthritis probleM In
Ontario. On the results 'of this
survey 'the society will base future
plans for, improved and extended
service. June is designated as
"Arthritis Registration Month".
While it - is known Abet 'there are
approximately 100 forms of arthri-
tis and rheumatic diseases, there
are no recent figures on their rela—
tive incidence in Canada. The only
available data was obtained nine
years ago through a survey made
by the Dominion Bureau of Statis-
tics and the Department of -Health
and Welfare.
Official surveys Indicate these
diseases totally or severelydisabled
50,000 Canadians; partiatly disabled
a further 115,000; cost Canadian
workers - and business 9,000,000
work days annually, with a result-
ing loss of F5,000,000. each year in
wages alone. These figures did not
take into account the heavy costs
of hospital and medical treatment,
of drugs, the care of the family,
and other related expenses' borne by
the sufferers; their faimilies, and
the taxpayers. e,
For the purpose of aiding and
furthering the society's program to
assist sufferers from the rheumatic
diseases, CARS wants, present-day
facts. With the support of the On-
tario Pharmacists' Association, the
Ontario Division plans to obtain
these facts as well as to give fac-
tual information by a confidential,
free registration of arthritis suf-
ferers through their drug stores.
"Perhaps the most important fea-
ture of this registration, is that it
will enable the society' to get fac-
tual information in the hands of
the sufferers", says Dr. D. C.
Graham, medical director.
For those who suffer ri="—arth-
ritis and are unable to visit their
druggist 'to register, a member of •
