Tossell Warns
Farmers About
Sorghum Almum •
Don't depend, on sorghum almum
(sometimes called sorghum grass)
for a big part of your forage needs
this .year,, advises OAC forage re-
searcher, Dr. Bill TosSell. "Farm-
ers who want to _try it should re-
cognize they are growing a crop
that hasn't been tested to any ex-
tent in 'Ontario, Try a test field--
MaYbe an, acre only," he suggests.
Tossell said this in reply to the
direct-mail 'barrage that farmers
have 'been receiving this winter
about -sorghum .almum,
"Last summer was the first time
we had the crop under test and it
gave'.no. more pasture than; sudan
'grass," says the Ontario Depart-
ment • of Agriculture researcher,
"UV's not much good as a silage
crop either," he adds. "Last sum-
mer's heat was ideal for sorghum
almum, yet the tonnage was slight-
ly -below corn's and of much poorer
feed value." In an -average year, he
believes sorghum almum would
yield only 8-10 tons compared to a
,13,-Lon yield of corn silage.
Two big question marks still re-
main; Winter survival and prussic
Judd content. Scientists will know
this spring about winter survival.
First tests show the prussic acid
content to be high but not as high
as expected. Research is continu-
ing.

Mr. Hamilton described the new

duped ,'by the Bureau "T OM sure it
