The Farm Safety Council of On-
tario, composed of farm people
from the counties and districts in
the province, was formed recently
in Toronto, The council will co-
ordinate and encourage the co-
operation of county and district
Farm Safety Councils in , Ontario,
and strive in all its activities to
bring about a safe rural communi-
ty.
Chairman of the council is Grant
Smith, of Burgessville, with Larry
Doble, of Uxbridge, and Eugene
Lemon, of Stouffyille, as vice-
Chairmen. Other executive mem-
bers are: Ted Dunn, Bayfield; Mrs.
Helen ,Smith, Gananoque; W. A.
Smith, Emo; Arnold Spaull, War-
ren.
Many counties and districts have
already formed their own safety
councils, and these will work in
conjunction With the overall pro-
gram of the Farm Safety Council
of Ontario. Each county and dis-
trict safety council will work out
safety programs that apply to par-
ticular conditions in the area con-
cerned.
The formation of the Farm Safe-
ty Council of Ontario follows the
Provincial Farm Accident Survey
which was undertaken by the On-
tario Department of Agriculture,
with the assistance of local people
and organizations, for the one-year
period ending February 29, 1960.
Figures on the year-long farm ac-
cident picture are now being
analyzed, and these will assist' the
council in drawing up a safety
education program, ler On, tgio
farm pOople.
"The Ontario Department ' of
Agriculture is proud to have played
a part in drawing attention to the
seriousness of the farm accident
problem in Ontario," said Ontario
Minister, of Agriculture, the Hon.
W. A. Goodfellow, when addressing
the Farm Safety Council on its
formation. "The Department pledg-
es its support of the council's
safety education program, and will
help in any way possible to see that
effective measures are taken in ac-
cident 'prevention for our farm
people."

dangers.
Provincial- Entomologist H. W.
Goble says: ',i1We've already taken
several insect killers off our re-
commended list 'because of the
chance of meat and milk contam-
ination. Officials Of the National
Health and Welfare Department in'
Ottawa have ruled that insecticides
that leave harmful residues on feed
and market crops can no longer be
used,
Crops to keep out of livestock
feeds :will be pea vines on which
DDT was used for aphid control.
and corn husks and cobs that have
been treated with endrin 'or 'DDT
for corn borer control. Forage
crops en which aldrin, endrin,
dieldrin, toxaphene, or DDT was
applied might be contaminated too,
When these crops are eaten by
animals, the chemicals may stay in
the milk "or Meat.
A cash crop insecticide, hepta-
chlor, has been taken off the re-
commended dist for market crops,
says Goble, Don't use heptachlor
for control of root maggot on
turnips, radish, and onions; or for
control of carrot rust fly, wire-
worms, cutworms, and white grubs
on potatoes. Heptachlor may be
used on lawns, golf courses, shade
trees, and in any place where food
drops are not grown.
Phosphate,type insecticides such
AS malathion, parathion, guthion,
and phosdrin may be used on crops
fed to livestock. But only if there
is sufficient time between treating
and feeding for the residues to
escape. These time-spans appear
on the manufacturer's label.
