Dru, gists Warn Of Inferior imports John MoKibboit returned last week from the semi-annual Meet- ing, of the Ontario Retail Manna- ciste Association, He represents District No, 12, which is made up roughly Al the counties of Grey. Brine and Huron. Mr. MeKib- bon reports tremendous strides be- ing Made in the pharmaceutical field, both socially and in the area of control research. The president of the Pharma- ceutical Manufacturers spoke at it panel meeting as Well pa the pre- sident of the proprietary (patent medicine.) division. Both men ex- pressed their opinions on the Am- erican investigation presently go- ing on. They both felt the Can- ,adian pliatenaceutical manufactur- era could stand up to any Canadian investigation and prove their costs warranted the present prices being charged the Canadian public. They stressed the lack of rigid control on Imported European drugs. and the inability of our food and drug department at Ottawa to cope with imported drugs. Most of the "cheap" drugs and chemicals ap- pearing on the Canadian market are from Europe and are not standardized in any way. The fin- ishxd. Canadian products have gone through rigid control laboratories, through every step of their manu- facture, hence can be explained in part at Jeast the vast difference in price of finished products. While some Ot the prescription drugs do appear on the surface expensive, Canadians can rest as- sures that Canadian manufactured drugs, chemicals and compounds have been more carefully control- led than similar products made in any other country in the world, Possibly one of the most impor- tant developments in Ontario phar- macy is the Essex County experi- ment known as the "Green Shield Prescription Plan". While only 18 months old and still in the ele- mentary development stages, it is the only prepaid prescription ser- vices plan in existence in the world. The University of Miohi4 gan's I.B.M. machines are doing the vast accounting job necessary before such a plan can be univer- sally used, Possibly before too long Ontario and all of Cariada can he given the opportunity of join- ing in such a service. Then all doctor-prescribed medicines could be prepaid in much the same way that Ontario Hospital Services is now available to any resident in Ontario, The Essex County phar- macists have initiated a plan that could mean a real boon to all Can- adians, since Green Shield is a non-profit organization sporksored by these pioneer druggists. °Om Bargainsl!
