A pleasant surprise
Let's face it, restaurants located in
shopping malls do not exactly have the
kind of reputation that makes you want to
line up to get in the door. So it was a bit of a
surprise to find some different and
interesting food on a visit to Three AAA
See restaurant in a new shopping
development in the north end of Exeter. At
least for part of the meal.
The restaurant offers a coffee shop plus
a raised dining area that offers a little more
comfort for diners with carpeted floors,
gold table cloths and large, comfortable
captains chairs. The walls of rough plaster
make it a bright and cheery place, almost a
unique experience at a time when more
and more restaurants seem to compete to
see who can make it the darkest.
A quick look at the menu didn't do much
to invite the idea of a meal that offered
something extra either. It was crammed
tuts of selection. Too often a restaurant that
tries to offer something for everyone ends
up delivering very little for anyone.
But we spied a section of the menu
comprised of European dishes and both the
lady and the writer gravitated to it
immediately. The lady chose beef shish
kebab with pilaf rice. The writer chose the
breast of chicken with mushrooms and
wine sauce. We were warned that these
would take a while to prepare which might
disappoint someone in a hurry to get back
on the road but was a good sign for those
who wanted food with a bit of flair. If it
takes a while to prepare it can't be sitting
there getting rubbery under heat lamps.
A salad came with the meal. It was made
of lettuce and celery but had little colour or
excitement. A basket containing two large
rolls was also presented. They were crusty
and appeared to have been the kind one
can buy at the bakery counter in any
supermarket
The main dishes arrived without too long
a delay. They proved to be the happy
surprise of the day. The presentation was
nice if not spectacular. The lady's shish
kebab didn't arrive on a flaming skewer as
it often does but already r?moved and on

pleasant combination of spices and sauce.

and perliaps other less noticeable
ingredients. It was a treat. This also was
2,-companied by the pilaf rice.
Would that we had left it at that. Instead
we decided to sample the dessert menu.
Aside from a good selection of pies it was
unimaginative. We tried the pies. The lady
had mincemeat. The writer had raisin.
Others with us had cherry and apple. All
appeared as if they'd recently -come off the
shelves of the supermarket next door. They
were a distinct disappointment after the
obvious care that had gone into preparing
the entree.
Service throughout was pleasant and
helpful. The bill for two came to under
513.00. Now if only the management could
make the extras compare with the main
course Three AAA See Restaurant could do
a lot to improve the image of shopping
centre restaurants.
