Although the collection is not large, it is
regarded as top quality. Besides the
largest collection of Canadian paintings in
the world, the gallery possesses a
reputable collection of modern European
and American sculpture and paintings.
Guided tours, lectures, films. gallery
talks and formally organized education
programs are all features of the National
Gallery.
QUEBEC
In the century since it was first opened.
the Musee-des-beaux-arts in Montreal,
Quebec, has developed into an art gallery
with a cosmopolitan scope. Visitors can
view everything from Egyptian statues
dating back to 2000 BC to modern abstract
paintings by Pablo Picasso.
Old Quebec woodcarvings and silver
highlight the Canadian section of the
museum, along with paintings. Holdings
range from portraits of the Quebec
bourgeoisie of the early 1800s through
Krieghoff and the Group of Seven to the
colorful creations of modern painters.
ATLANTIC CANADA
The art galleries of the Atlantic
Provinces are small but no less noteworthy.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery in
Fredericton. New Brunswick holds the
second largest collection of British art in
Canada. The gallery, opened in 1959 to
house Lord Beaverbrook's private collect-
ion, is also popular for its selection of
works by the abstract painter, Salvador
Dali. The largest public collection of works
by the artists Cornelius Krieghoff is also
housed here.
There are five Memorial University Art
Galleries in Newfoundland. One of them.
the Corner Brook Memorial Art Gallery. is
known for its exhibits of works done by
artists practising in Newfoundland. Simil-
arly, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
spotlights the historical and contemporary
art of Nova Scotia. with emphasis on the
folk art of the province.
The Confederation Centre in Charlotte-
town, Prince Edward Island houses a
substantial collection of Canadian art and
handcrafts. The works of Robert Harris.
one of Canada's foremost painters, make
up a large part of the collection. The
original oil sketch for Harris' famous
painting, The Fathers of Confederation
hangs in the gallery.
