Village Squire, 1979-11, Page 29they played the bar circuit; now they perform at country clubs. dining lounges. eddings and private parties. ' Recording her songs became an important personal goal for Gloria, a:d the Mercy Brothers' Studio in Elmira was highly recommended. The studio manager talked with her at length before the project began. Recording is a costly venture. and he wanted the artist to understand the situation and to be certain she w;inted to do it. Gloria was certain and oas never regretted her decision. The single and album were produced by Danny Coughlan of the Tree House TV show in Kitchener and arranged by Rob Assclstine of the Mercey Brothers' Studio. Processional musicians played; some from Grand Old Country. a nationally televised program. On the album. two of the Mercy Brothers played and two of the Tee Keys provided background vocals. • Gloria talks enthusiastically about the cooperation of Danny, Rob and the musicians. "They demand a great deal of themselves.— she explains. "They want to do a good job every time. It's a good feeling to take your material in and know the... will work so hard to help you produce a quality sound." The album contains six of Gloria's compositions - 1 Like Country, Don't Say You Love Me. Darling Won't You Say. You Mean So Much To Me. Sweet Heavenly Music and Kim's Song. The other four songs are Barbara Steisand's The Way We Were; Olivia Newton -John's If You Love Me. Let Me Know; Anne Murray's You Needed Me; and Marie Bottrell's Lovin' You. Gloria loves to sing Streisand ballads. but she points out that one artist should not copy another. Every performer has her own style. and Gloria's style is evident whether she is performing one of her own compositions or a Streisand classic or an Olivia Newton -John hit. Most of Gloria's music is classified as pop country. She has been writing songs for years. "They just come to me," she says, "usually when I'm alone; if there are people around, 1 find it more difficult to write." "1 think the songs must be coming from God," she continues. "1 don't know where else they could be coming from since 1 have no training, just a little theory that I learned in school." Her songs are written about people. emotions and situations. For example, she wrote Kim's Song for a young friend of hers from Listowel, seven-year-old Kini Lowry who is blind. When an artist records .Inde: a recording company label, she receives help with promotion and distribution of her record. As yet, Gloria has not signed with a recording company.
