In October 1978. she cut her first single. "Don't Say You Love Me." al Mercy Brothers' Studio in Elmira - a week before her 23rd birthday. Stratford radio station CJCS played Don't Say You Love Me, which was Side One of the single for more than 23 weeks: Side Two. I Like Country, received air time on country stations in Wingham. Wood- stock, Kitchener and Tillsonburg. The success of the single encouraged Gloria to record her first album in August 79. The album, entitled I Like Country, was released in early November. Gloria had no vocal training and took guitar lessons for only a few months when she was 16. She always enjoyed singing and playing but was rather shy about it. She remembers singing around campfires with her parents when they spent their summers at a trailer camp near Bayfield. The owner of the camp heard her singing and asked her to perform at a talent show put on by the campers. She also sang some gospel songs, that she had written, at the camp's church services. In Mitchell, she performed at some functions of Job's Daughters - an organization for daughters of Masons. Few of her fellow students at Mitchell District High School were aware of her talent, however, until her last year in school when one of the teachers asked her to play at a Christmas program. "There were a few hoots when I went on". recalls Gloria. "because the kids didn't know I could sing. But once I started they became very quiet and when I fi"ished they gave me a standing ovation." It was a boost for her self-confidence. and for the first time. she realized people enjoyed listening to her songs as much as she enjoyed singing them. After high school, she studied a secretarial course but realized she didn't want it to be her life's work. Singing continued to be the one thing she enjoyed doing, and she gradually came to the idea of taking a shot at a singing career. Competition in the music business is high. and landing a job with a band proved difficult. In the meantime. she found work with Colormat Photo Labs Ltd. in Stratford and is now manager of the Stratford nutlet. Two and a half years ago she was hired by Tom McKay of Stratford as lead vocalist in his band. The Tee Keys. The group has worked hard.
