Local farmers started the cheese factory under the name of
Elma Cheese and Butter Company. It started with 200 shares at
20 dollars each. From 1900 to 1944 the company produced
between 300,000 and 500,000 pounds of cheese a year. The only
cheese they made was cheddar.
The Atwood factory was one of the first factories to make
butter with a separator, that enabled them to reclaim the six
percent protein and the fat in the whey. Before 1920, the
company only made creamery butter, and after that, it produced
whey butter.
In 1956 the company stopped making butter altogether. Mr.
