library grounds, with bag lunch, games and prizes and more
prizes. For Teddy Bears and people of all ages, a gathering was
held in London, Ontario a few months ago; and here in Stratford,
the Teddy Bears' Picnic at Brocksden Country School Museum.
Brenda Comeau from Toronto brought her bears. She said that
as a little girl toys were very real to her and she was fascin.ded
by the stories of bears.
Brenda would like to start a Good Bears of the World in
Canada. Her bears are named, Alfred, Billy the Bear, Ned the
Ted, Bad little Gurl, Teddy Boink, Grisly, Manfred Smart, Bruno
and her first and favorite bear, whom she has given the lengthy
name of Chris Von Bismark, Baron of Steiff, Viscount of Liinsten.
Bismark. for short, travels with Brenda on her trips overseas. He
wears a royal red ribbon across his chest on which is
embroidered: My name is Bismark. If you find me please I
endear you return me to my mistress who loves me most of all.
Reward for my safe delivery to Canada House, Trafalgar Sq.,
London. England."
Sitting in her hotel room, in full view. Bismark helps to dispel
loneliness and seems like a friendly companion closeby.
Brenda, Bismark, the host of other teddy bears, their owners
and guests moved out on to the beautiful park -like grounds
surrounding Brocksden Country School Museum at midafter-
noon. The bears were arrayed for all to see. Chairs were placed
in the shade of the maples. A long plank table was set up, soon to
be covered with tempting picnic fare: plates of cookies, tasty
squares, macaroons, slices of nut bread. Large containers held
iced drinks of orange, lemon and grape.
Then came the main attraction of the afternoon. The cutting of
the large Teddy Bear cake, decorated by Paul McKone.
The picnic will be remembered by those who attended. It will
be viewed by many others. Leo Zourdowmis of Toronto and his
co-worker, spent the afternoon shooting a movie of the many
teddy bears, the children, adults and events; as well as
conducting interviews to find out interesting facts about
individual bears or special collections. The film is the history of
"TEDDY BEARS" with a special feature on the Teddy Bears'
Picnic held at the Brocksden Country School Museum.
