to more new interests
By Susanne Jones
September is traditionally back -to -school
month. and the best way to avoid the let
down feeling at summer's end is to take
advantage of some of the many courses
offered esccially for adults this fall.
Stratford and the surrounding areas
provide an impressive range of classes in
everything fromacademic subjects to
crafts. cooking and physical fitness.
Conestoga College has campuses in
Clinton and Stratford as well as those in the
Kitchener -Waterloo area. and courses are
available in academic subjects such as
English and Mathematics, and special
interest topics like bartending, home
carpentry and driver training. Among the
other classes being offered at Clinton are
office and secreterial skills, nursing and
basic C.P.R. (cardiopulmonary resuscita-
tion). The Stratford campus will include
conversational Spanish, starting a small
business, welding. cooking, guitar and
theatre crafts, and many more. Most
classes begin in mid-September, and you
can register now. either by mail or
weekday evenings at either campus.
The University of Waterloo offers
several extension courses in Stratford
which can be taken either for college credit
or as a free public lecture. This September
you can learn about Canadian Culture and
Society, a series of lectures concerning
national themes and issues such as the
French and the British factors in Canada,
The Idea of Frontier, Grits and Tories, and
Settlements -New and Old. In January a
course in Shakespeare will be given for
those who wish to learn something about
the plays. A course in Introductory Relief
Printing is being offered in conjunction
with the Gallery Stratford, in which
students will be taught the fundamentals of
printmaking, including intaglio, silkscreen-
ing and lithography. A prerequisite of Fine
Arts 120/121 or the consent of the
instructor is necessary for this course.
The Gallery Stratford also provides a
class for beginners in drawing at the
Kiwanis Community Centre. There are ten
weekly sessions held on Tuesday mornings
from 9:30 to 11:30, and the total fee is
S20.00. For serious students the Gallery
provides a nude model in an open studio on
Wednesday evenings from 8:00 until 10:00
p.m. There is a fee of two dollars per
evening, and students are required to
bring their own materials. Teen art classes
are in the process of being formed for those
who would like instruction beyond the high
school level.
If you enjoy working with your hands,
perhaps a pottery course would be of
interest. The Stratford Potter'c Guild at
