Village Squire, 1979-09, Page 18Heavy sweaters are popular this fall.
lapels are slightly narrower. The suit trouser is smaller at the
knee and bottom. Plains and neat patterns are popular, but
herring bone and tweed are also shown. Dress shirts come in two
main fabrics - 65%/35% polyester/cotton and 80%/20% cotton/
polyester. Eyelet collars.and button-down collars are shown, and
collar points are shorter.
Black is trying to make a comeback in both the dress shirt and
the sport shirt. Plain black shirts are available as well as shirts
with an approximately 11/2 inch windowpane check in black.
Ties are slightly narrower; plain ties are shown but striped ties
in earth tones are predominate.
According to Mr. Rawson, burgundy - a new fall colour - will
remain strong on the over -fashion scene for men for the entire
fall and winter season.
Mr. Swartman notes heavy Harris tweed is making a
comeback in the sports' jacket. The pleated pant with wider knee
and narrow bottom, reminiscent of the 50s' styles, is returning.
Fashion jeans for the fall and winter season of 79/80 are 70
percent straight leg.
Belt loops are being narrowed, and men should not buy belts
any wider than one and a quarter inches.
A young men's suit is the corduroy suit with pleated pant.
Sleeveless sweater co-ordinates are being worn with sports'
jackets and pants in lieu of vests, adds Mr. Swartman. Sports'
jackets and vests are sold as separates, and are bought for their
appeal and warmth.
Heavy, bulky sweaters are popular; some have collars and
some are open in the front.
Mr. Swartman describes the "real sporty look" of a certain
sports' shirt made of plaid flannel fabric or ultra -suede that
"oozes comfort."
Ms. Stucky points out that men's hats are continuing to grow
in popularity; weather is probably the main factor. Hats range
from the conventional small check pattern to the fur felt hat in
plain colours.
She summarizes the over-all fashion look for men for the 79/80
fall and winter season. Velour and wool sweaters are big for fall;
this is the third strong season for velour. Other dominate fabrics
are pure wool and wool blends, while tweed aefigrey flannel are
staging comebacks.
The three-piece suit is still strong in Western Ontario. The
trouser has narrow legs and bottoms, and the pleated pant is
slowly coming back. The dress shirt has a smaller collar and a
looser body; a fine line has been drawn between the dress shirt
and the sports' shirt. Ties are narrowed giving a neater
appearance, and colours are subdued.
Although dramatic changes have added a new dimension to
men's fashion, the classic look remains. 0
