Village Squire, 1979-09, Page 16was common in the 40s and is enjoying a resurgence in the 79/80
season in coats, suits and sweaters.
Ms. Swartman lists important accessories as belts, gloves,
hats and scarves. Oblong scarves in silk or mohair should not be
tied but should be allowed to hang.
The three shop owners summarize their opinions of the fashion
scene for ladies in the 79/80 fall and winter season:
Shirley Walker calls the fashions "sharp" flattering".
Anita Swartman says, "My rule for fashion is 'wear what you
can wear, and now is the best time for that rule because the
styles have a wide range."
Bertha Miller concludes, "New looks make the fashion
industry exciting, and the fall and winter of 1979/80 have a great
many 'new looks'."
FOR MEN
Men's fashions for the fall and winter of 1979/80 have made
some dramatic changes, but at the same time, they have retained
a "classic" look. Three shop owners describe the styles for
well -tailored men.
Althea Stucky of Hanna's Men's and Boys' Wear in Wingham
explains that wool is used in some overcoats, but the leather and
all-weather styles retain their popularity. The bomber jacket
remains strong, especially with the younger set.
Melton cloth, a wool -look fabric, that was common in the '50s
is reappearing on the fashion scene.
According to Bob Swartman of Swartman Men's Wear in
Exeter, men are looking for coats and jackets that are warm and
rugged yet lightweight. •
Wool is used for some top coats, but a gabardine coat with a
zip -out dining is a little more dressy. Also available are
natural -fibre sheep -skin coats and warm fibre -filled nylon styles.
Earl Rawson of Earl Rawson Ltd. in Goderich explains that by
the spring of 1980 the complete vested look in suits could go to
the two-piece suit 20 percent to 40 percent, but for the fall and
winter of 79/80, the vested suit is 100 percent.
The suit coat is two button, single-breasted with centre vent;
The two -button suit coat la the look in suite for fall.
