A picnic spot in the middle of a bustling town, with houses
only a few feet away may not seem on the surface like a very
quiet relaxing place but appearances can be deceiving.
The park by the lighthouse in Goderich is an interesting place
to picnic. Take West Street off the Square and follow it past the
Harbour Park Inn (don't take the road leading down to the beach)
and on to where the street ends with a loop at the lakeshore.
The park is small with only two or three picnic tables. There
are playground toys to keep the younger children occupied.
You'll have to keep an eye on them because the park is located on
the high cliffs above the Lakeshore and a tumble off the edge
could be tragic. But there's plenty of room for the children to
roam without danger.
They're likely to be fascinated watching the revolving light of
the lighthouse that flashes its signals out for miles over the water
to let ships know they're off Goderich harbour.
A look over ;he cliffs can tell you why this spot was picked for
the lighthouse. The water seems far below. The cliff gives a view
of the harbour and the salt mine below. The trucks and boats
suddenly take on an appearance of matchbox toys from here. The
sounds are far off and muffled. Somehow in the relative silence
it's easy to forget that you're really closer to downtown than the
harbour is. Looking out over the water one has the feeling of
being all alone.
