Village Squire, 1979-08, Page 8baby quilts and afghans lay in an old wicker bassinette which has a special meaning for the Jervises since their two boys, Colin, six, and Robin, four and a half, both slept in it as babies. The quilt room also contains handmade shawls, ponchos and handbags. In the next room you will find unusual greeting cards and gift wrap, and children's books from England. Roxanne has tried to stock items throughout the store which are not found in other shops. She has packaged a variety of dried berries and cornstalk flowers to use as decorations for straw wreaths. There are also finished wreaths for sale, made by Roxanne during her few spare hours. Customers can see some fine examples of her oil paintings on sale, as well as prints by well known artists like Mathias Muleme, and woven wall hangings by Iris Wright and Sharon Etherington. An item of particular interest to residents of the surrounding areas are the reprints of original Historical Atlases of counties in Western Ontario. In the atlas of Perth County Roxanne discovered that Shakespeare was larger than Stratford back in 1879. There are plenty of items for children in the shop, including wooden toys, Beatrix Potter china, cloth animals and "Vegemals", stuffed toys in the shapes of celery, peas and other vegetables that will help any youngster learn to love their greens. Hannah Schito of Cambridge makes apple dolls in sumptuous Elizabethan costumes expecially for the store, and there are other dolls made from clothespegs, corn husks or burlap. Pleasant fragrances abound in the bath boutique corner, stocked with finely -milled English and Canadian soaps and potpourri from Claire Burke. A sweet tooth can be gratified through the purchase of Greaves jams, natural honey or imported sweets. Boxes of the delicious Boston Harbour tea which is served in the restaurant are on sale. Harry Ten Shilling has sole rights to the product in Ontario. A jaunty crocheted tea cozy to keep your brew warm is available too. Roxanne and Michael close Harry Ten Shilling near the end of December until the following Spring to allow themselves time to work on renovations to their upstairs, and to "regroup the family", spending more time together after the busy tourist season. In mid-December they hold their annual Twelve Days Before Christmas Sale. Cozy lambswool hats and mohair throws would make perfect gifts, or buy the collector on your list a limited edition plate or a piece of crystal from Sweden or England. While you're there, be sure to take time out to sample a traditional British Christmas tea. But you don't have to wait till Christmas to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of Harry Ten Shilling. The combination of English charm and Canadian hospitality will make your visit there a pleasant experience at any time. Misconduct: No running. No walking. No exercise. No effort.
