Get outside and enjoy the weather while we still can. One of the ways of doing so is to pack a picnic lunch and head for a nice spot to eat it. This month Village Squire conducted a survey of some of the more popular and interesting picnic spots. Some are large, some small but all offer a nice place to enjoy an informal meal. If you want a relaxing but slightly more formal dining you might visit Harry Ten Shilling as freelancer Susanne Jones did. She found the Shakespeare tea-room and gift shop an interesting and friendly place to visit. Turning from food before we're too stuffed to turn, Elaine Townshend talks to a man with a hobby that has become so fascinating to him that he hopes to make it a full-time occupation someday. Sam Doherty discovered the enjoyment of working with wood in a high school shop class and since then has filled his house with products of his skills. Another way to enjoy the great outdoors is provided regularly at Formosa where people can mix the pleasures of the park -like setting with the enjoyment of listening to some of the top Bluegrass music makers in Ontario. It's called Pickin In The Pines and Gary Moon tells us about it. A fascinating Western Ontario character of the past was brought to light recently by a new book by Joseph L. Wooden. A Drum To Beat Upon tells the story of Narcisse Cantin a man of vision whose dreams seemed to be before his time. He envisioned the St. Lawrence Seaway and saw it making his home town of St. Joseph near Grand Bend into a bustling commercial centre. We have a review of the book. We have fiction this month with a gentle tale of growing up in a gentler age. We have McGillicuddy's Diary. There's Update and People and the dining review and entertainment listings. • Plenty to keep you busy on one of those lazy August afternoons.
