Perth artists
co-operate
to run
Gallery 96
In a way it's what an art gallery should
be, hidden away in a back alley in a
once -unused basement giving one the
feeling of somehow having made a great
discovery when one enters the door.
Thee may like that atmosphere but the
members of Gallery 96 are also doing their
best to make sure more and more people
are making the discovery of the back -alley
gallery. They want to let people see what
the artists of the Perth region can produce.
Gallery 96 is one of a growing number of
started out five years ago on Downie St. in
Stratford when five artists tented a shop
and opened it as a gallery called Dear
Friends Gallery. The five took turns
staffing the gallery and keeping it going.
Later the numer of artists involved
increased and i: became Gallery 96 after
the address of the gallery. But in 1977 an
eviction notice came to the gallery as the
building owner wanted to make other use
