Village Squire, 1979-07, Page 24contingent consisted of one world class
runner and five recreational runners.
None of the Canadian runners quit. One
fellow took five and a half hours to
complete the course but he wouldn't give
up. The Canadians beat several runners
from Scandinavian countries causing Kevin
to dismiss the myth about the 20 -year-old
Canadian versus the 60 -year-old Swede.
One of the things he remembers most
vividly about the marathon is hitting the
wall - the name runners have given to the
point where they hit the dense suffocating
fog that encloses Athens. According to
Kevin, Athens is the most pollution -filled
city he has found.
He finished 49th with a time of three
hours, one minute and 44 seconds - the
strongest race he had ever run. He had
hoped to break three hours, which would
have qualified him for the Boston marathon
in April. Boston is the only marathon in the
world more prestigious than the Greece
Marathon. Kevin's goal in 1979 is to break
the three-hour barrier and qualify for the
1980 Boston marathon.
"It's a personal thing," he explains.
"Breaking three hours is a goal; I run
against it every time I train, every time I
race. I don't think setting a goal is
fanaticism."
After he reaches his goal, he and his
wife, Yvonne, will probably re-evaluate his
time investment. Most of his evenings in
the past year have been spent on the road,
and it's not surprising that he now has
Yvonne running as well. She is up to a
mile, and although she isn't interested in
longer distances or competitive races, she
would like to enter some "fun races."
"I think she is experiencing the same
thing I did," says Kevin. "Running is a
personal pick-me-up."
"Slow runners can run in the same races
as the fast runners," he continues. "We
can run with the best -Jerome Drayton,
Frank Shorter. We can't beat them, but we
can run on the same course without feeling
embarrassed. No other sport offers that."
