Village Squire, 1979-07, Page 11Les Jervis' game sanctuary near Holmesville has provided many hours of enjoyment for animals and
humans over the years, all for free.
An act of love
There are some people who do big things
in life that effect the future of the whole
world. There are others who leave little
mark on the world whatever. And then
there are others who do little things that
bring joy to many people.
Les Jervis is one of the latter group. For
years he's been bringing pleasure both to
himself and many others at his little game
park just north of Holmesville on highway 8
between Clinton and Goderich.
There's nothing fancy about the park,
just a fenced -off pond with a waterwheel at
the rear.. backed by wooded hills. Yet many
children have been introduced to unusual
animals at the Jervis sanctuary and all for
nothing more expensive than a few crusts
of bread or some grain.
Favourites at the park are the deer. tiny
imported deer with beautiful sets of antlers
and young often by their sides. They know
suckers when they see them and come
running when a car pulls up beside the
fence. They wade out into the water and
battle the ducks for tidbits thrown by
onlookers.
Also on view are peacocks, fan -tail
pigeons, a multi -coloured turkey. ducks
and bantam chickens of various colours and
across the road in the farm next door, a
llama.
Jt isn't exactly like visiting the Metro zoo
for variety but it's a fun, relaxing way for
children to see animals right up close. And
it's free. thanks to the efforts of Les Jervis.
