scrambling up 30 m (100 -foot) spar trees;
sawing Douglas firs; log rolling; and all
sorts of ingenious chopping methods.
Events are simultaneous, so spectators can
watch their favourite activity throughout or
follow a favorite contestant through his
various competitions.
While many logging festivals are held
throughout the province in spring and
summer. All-Sooke Day is the grandaddy
of them all, attracting competitors from as
far away as Australia and New Zealand.
It's held in Sooke, a half-hour drive from
Victoria, this year on July 21.
Backward glances are also celebrated at
Saskatchewan fairs such as Swift Current's
Frontier Days (June 29 -July 2) and North
Battleford's Those Were The Days (July
21-22), and. in Manitoba, during Winkler's
Ofd Time Days (August 21-25) and
Steinbach's Pioneer Days (August 3-6).
CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS
Music, theatre and art are always lovely
reasons for gathering people together. One
of the finest gatherings is the Banff
Festival of the Arts, where Rocky
Mountain grandeur combines with top-
notch opera, drama, music and solo
performances to guarantee several days
(August 1-18) of superb entertainment.
Students and faculty of the Banff School
of Fine Arts. renowned for their talent and
versatility, stage performances in theatres
and galleries at the school, and in parks,
campgrounds, hotels, libraries and other
facilities in Banff, always with that same
beautiful background of Rocky Mountain
peaks. °
This year's fare includes two Puccini
operas. Gianni Schicci and Suor Angelica,
in English, August 2-4; the musical,
Carousel. August 9-11; and two classical
dance works. Jazz and Les Whoops -Di
Doo.
In British Columbia. two theatre
festivals. each in a unique setting. further
delight summer audiences. The Four
Seasons Musical Theatre in Victoria
presents a Noel Coward Revue and
S'wonderful. S'marvellous. S'Gershwin
from July 21 to August 25 in the Belfry
Theatre, a converted church still resplend-
ent with early victorian architecture.
In Vancouver, Theatre in the Park
presents two musicals, The Pirates of
Penzance (June 29 -July 7) and No No
Nanette (July 12-28). in Stanley Park, with
a backdrop of tall trees, seashore and
mountain peaks.
One of Manitoba's most delightful
summer theatre series is Interlake Festival
at Winnipeg Beach. June 22 -August 25.
This year's playbill includes award-
winning Sleuth. June 22 -July 1; Man of La
Mancha. July 4-22; Same Time Next Year,
July 25 -August 5; and Flicks, August 8-25.
There are also Saturday night readings of
new plays. workshops. an an .kaIh r�
featuring, Manitoba
theatre musical entertainment at the
Moonlighter. a cabaret.
In Regina, a dramatic presentation of
historical significance is staged every
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, June 26
to August 31, in Saskatchewan House. The
Trial of Louis Riel is a dramatic recreation
of the famous 1885 trial of Canada's
controversial Metis leader.
CELEBRATIONS OF LAND AND SEA
The western provinces, having some of
Canada's best agricultural land, have a
proliferation of rural fairs celebrating their
farming interests. Communities, large and
small, from Manitoba to British Columbia
have earth -oriented affairs like Brandon's
Agricultural Exhibition (October 29-
Novembei 2), Morden's Corn and Apple
Festival (August 24-25) and Austin's
Threshermen's Reunion (July 25-28), in
Manitoba; Wanham's Provincial Plowing
Match Championship (June 13-16), in
Alberta; and Regina's Western Canada
Farm progress Show (June 20-23),
Bounty's Agricultural Fair and Sports Day
(July 19), and Pense's Horticultural Show
(August 11). in Saskatchewan.
Vancouver, with its lovely setting on the
Pacific Ocean, surrounded by towering
mountains, celebrates its sea -location with
the Vancouver Sea Festival (July 14-22).
Water -related events like swimming
competitions and boat displays are
highlighted by the annual bathtub race 55
km (34 miles) across the Strait of
Georgia---Nanaimo to' Vancouver ---on the
last day of the festival.
Sports is another popular theme. In
British Columbia there are such events as
Kelowna's Annual Regatta (July 26-29); in
Alberta, St. Albert's Alberta Summer
Games (August 3-5); in Saskatchewan,
Saskatoon's Western Canada Summer
Games (August 12-19); and, in Manitoba,
Lynn Lake's Great Northern Pike Derby
(June 1-30).
The list of fairs and festivals in Canada's
four western provinces is almost endless.
These are just a few. They range from
large. internationally -famous events like
the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, to
smaller affairs with intriguing names like
Frog Follies (August 3-5) at St. Pierre, and
Canadian Turtle Derby (August 10-12) at
Boissevain, both in Manitoba.
