Village Squire, 1979-04, Page 22When the snow started going away,
Mary discovered that Howard's dogs had
been sneaking over to her place to do their
dirty work all winter long. Now since
Howard has six dogs only slightly smaller
than Hereford steers, and since Mary's
yard is rather small, it is just about
impossible to find a clean spot in the whole
yard. And Mary's cats when she'd try to
get them to go outside for some exercise
would take one sniff out that back door and
run and hide under the bed.
Well as she usually does, Mary found
her own solution to the problem. Howard
bought a new snowblower this year and he
leaves it parked beside his garage when
he's not using it. Well while he was at work
today, Mary "borrowed" the snowblower
and used it to clean all the snow and ... uh,
other remnants of winter ... from her yard
and blew it rather indiscriminantly into
Howard's yard. I hope that new stone
siding he put on his place last year is
washable.
MARCH 18: It was not a good St. Patrick's
Day for Paddy O'Hagen. Paddy's lived
down by the river for years and for years
he's also celebrated St. Patrick's Day down
at the Legion Hall. Now there aren't
exactly a lot of Irishmen here in Hamhocks
and so Paddy does pretty good for himself
come St. Patrick's Day. Nearly everybody's
ready to buy Paddy a drink on a day like
that.
Well Paddy went home from the Legion
last night pretty pleased with himself. Well
he drove his car down the hill and turned
into his driveway and suddenly found his
driveway wasn't there any more ... at least
it was, but it was under four feet of water.
Well Paddy wasn't too quick in reacting to
this and when he finally figured out that
the river must have flooded while he was
away and when he tried to put the car into
reverse, it was too late. The engine died
and there was a slow glug, glug sound as
the car sank. Some neighbours found
Paddy this morning, sleeping on the roof of
the car and waiting for the water to go
down.
MARCH 26: Well I see they're talking
hockey merger again. They've been having
about as much fun as when we had our
hockey merger here in Hamhocks.
The churches here in Hamhocks and
some of the outlying townships have had
this hockey league for a few years. Just
some guys who get together for some good
clean Christian fun on Wednesday nights.
Even Rev. Twickle plays and Father
Poloski referees. But the last few years the
attendance was declining a bit and it got so
that it was hard to come up with enough
money to pay the ice rentals. So somebody
suggested that the church league should
join up with the local industrial league.
Well the Industrial boys said that was all
right as long as the church boys paid for
half of the ice time. Well the church
leaguers thought that was a little steep
since they only had three teams and there
