Crowded
parking lot proves
popularity
of this
restaurant
There used to be a saying that if you
wanted to find a good place to eat when you
are travelling, look for a place with plenty
of trucks in the parking lot.
Well, it may not have been trucks, but it
was obvious that the Turnberry Tavern on
the edge of Wingham was a popular spot
when we arrived on recent Saturday
evening. It was nearly impossible to find a
parking spot.
It isn't that the Turnberry Tavern is
some exclusive, expensive dining spot.
From the outside it looks like the product of
a child's building set and in a way it is,
having been built in portions over the
years. It's been dressed up a good deal in
recent years but it's still not a candidate for
inclusion in a classy architecture magazine.
Inside it's not fancy either, just a clean,
bright dining spot. The dining room has
table clothes on the arborite tables and
shingled walls adding a touch of feeling to
the room, but it's still hardly a rival to
some of the top dining spots in the area.
But then for many people. sumptuous
surroundings aren't necessary for a meal.
Some even feel nervous when the
broadloom gets too thick, the decor too
rich, the waiters too polished (not to
mention the bill to astronomical).
The menu at the Turnberry Tavern offers
a wide selection from beef to chicken to
seafood, all at inexpensive prices. The lady
chose a breaded veal cutlet cordon bleu.
The writer optqd for a half -chicken.
A small salad accompanied the meal
along with a selection of three dressings.
Service got a little hap -hazard at this point
since we were only part way through the

salad when the entree arrived. presenting
something of a traffic jani on the table.
The veal was accompanied by a
combination of corn niblets and lima
beans. a strange combination that proved
interesting, and french fried potatoes. The
veal itself was a tasty combination of veal
stuffed with cheese and ham. The french
fries rated high compared to the fare
usually available.
The chicken came with coleslaw, french
fries and gravy. The coleslaw was the
commercially prepared kind, a disappoint-
ment. The chicken was simply and well
done.
The meal was topped off with a slice of
peacan pie for each of the diners and it was
a worthy ending.
The service began very well with a
waitress both friendly and helpful. Later,
however. it broke down a bit, both with the
untimely arrival of the entree and with a
long delay between the entree and dessert
and with the failure to deliver coffee with
the meal as it was ordered.
The price for the meal was only $9.40 for
two. less than the cost for one in many
restaurants so one can hardly expect the
kind of extras available at the higher
prices. For good, plain food at low prices.
the Turnberry Tavern seems to deserve its
heavy patronage. •
