Faced with a Western Ontario winter one has three basic
choices: head for southern climes, sit around and pout and feel
sorry for oneself, or get out and make the best of it. More and
more people are taking the last option.
When Randy and Audrey Collins moved to the snowbelt from
the "banana belt" of Essex county, they realized there must be
someway to put all that snow to use. The result is a successful
winter resort that grew into a year-round playground. We visited
it this month.
Another way of enjoying winter that has spread into the area in
the past couple of years is the old sport that has come back:
cross-country skiing. We take a look at some of the joys of the
sport in an article.
You may wish to just enjoy a cup of something hot while sitting
around the fire and a new tearoom in Listowel provides an
opportunity for that. Berson's Tearoom is examined in a story
this month.
And, if Sam McGregor has his way, you may just be able to
have some of the good things of summer in winter without
leaving Western Ontario. The Kincardine developer and
sometime politician has spent a lot of time and energy to promote
the idea of a huge greenhouse complex near Kincardine warmed
by waste heat from the Bruce Nuclear Power Project. Frances
Barrick talked to him about his dreams.
Clinton writer Elaine Townshend contributes two stories this
month. One is on a pursuit that may make you think of warmer
times: a new pet store in Goderich called The Fin 'n Beak. The
second to the top of the ladder: bare -bow archery.
From all of us at Village Squire, best wishes for a happy New
