Village Squire, 1978-12, Page 50"Anyone who is around gets involved,
especially at presstime," explains Shirley.
She recalls that the last issue was put
together shortly before the wedding of one
of their sons and even their future
daughter-in-law helped.
The Kerr's have produced four issues
thus far and have dealt with three different
printers: the current printing firm is in
Toronto. Max has been satisfied with the
work of all the printers, but he explains the
almanac is run like any other business and
the job of printing must go to the lowest
bidder.
When the almanac is finally sent to the
printers, Max and Shirley are exhausted.
Their workdays have stretched to 14 hours
or longer, and they wonder whether it is
worth all the bother. Then subscriptions
start to arrive along with letters saying
"o ngratulations" or "thank you." Ad-
vertisers call wanting to renew their ads or
to request larger more impressive ones,
because new customers mentioned seeing
the ads in the almanac.
Each issue contains a page of
meditations written by W.H. Smith of
Clifford. The author's family and friends
were the only people who had read the
poems before he released them to the
editor of the almanac. After reading the
first edition, a minister from Mississauga
drove to Milverton to personally tell the
editor how much he enjoyed the
meditations.
The readers appreciate having a
farmer's almanac written from a Canadian
point of view with a Canadian reader in
mind, and their appreciation makes Max
and Shirley eager to tackle the next issue.
The almanac is enjoyed by a variety of
readers. Some are farmers and farmers'
wives, who are accustomed to having an
almanac around the house. Others are
young people, who remember how much
their parents relied on the almanac and are
now finding out for themselves what it is all
about.
MacLean -Hunter distributes the publi-
cation to newsstands in cities and reports
its sales are high. The booklet is also
circulated to newsstands in eastern and
western provinces and is well-received
even though its weather forecasts pertain
primarily to Ontario.
The Canadian Farmer's Almanac
doesn't have the traditional hole in one
corner with which to hang it on the kitchen
wall, and that is not the only difference
between it and other almanacs. Maxwell
and Shirley Kerr want their publication to
be uniquely their own. It contains all the
information the readers expect to find in an
almanac as well as some things they don't
expect.
As the popularity of their almanac
grows, the Kerr's envision it becoming
familiar from coast to coast, and Max is
going to be around for a long time to
cone" concludes confidently, "Canada's
Own Canadian Farmers's Almanac.
