Village Squire, 1978-12, Page 13around including old time fiddlers. He knows. after judging
competitions at old time fiddle and step dancing events and
seeing the quality of performers around. With a little bit of help
and coaching. he says these people could be right up there with
many professionals.
"I've always felt it was unfair that any amateur program was
usually 'teller skelter. because there's a lot of work involved and
the amateurs are nervous and so on and I would always like to
seethe sound at least recorded first. so they don't have to worry
about making a mistake there and the audience. 1 think could get
more out of it too." He would particularly like to help the
amateur v:ho is to the point of almost being a pro. at the point
-:here he needs promotion. he needs exposure and just that
other experience to get into the pro. Usually they don't belong to
the musician's union. they can't appear on television. they have
to stay as an amateur but they feel that they're as good as many
pros and maybe better but they need that little bit of experience
to sell themselves.
Dreams. dreams. But who knows they night come true.
Already one dream has come true and the musicians of Western
Ontario have an opportunity that few other musicians have
thanks to Ernie King making that dream come true. Once again
this part of Ontario could become a hotbed for young musical
talent just like in the old days when Ernie King and others were
netting their start.
