A TERRIBLE BEAUTY: THE ART OF
CANADA AT WAR from November 4 to
December 10 at the Gallery/Stratford, 54
Romeo St., Stratford. A Terrible Beauty is
comprised of 104 works drawn from the
collection of the Canadian War Museum in
Ottawa. Started in 1917 by Lord
Beaverbrook, the Canadian war art
program was the largest undertaken by any
country. During the First World War. both
Canadian and British artists participated.
The Canadian contingent included William
Beatty. Maurice Cullen. A.Y. Jackson,
Franz Johnson, Arthur Lismer, David
Milne. and Fred Varley. Only Canadian
artists painted for the government during
the Second World War. These included
Miller Brittain, Alex Colville. Charles
Comfort. Lawren P. Harris, E.J. Hughes,
Will Ogilvie. Carl Schaefer. Eric Aldwink-
le. A.G. Broomfield and Charles Gold-
hamer.
