Her knowledge of the Canadian
publishing field will make her especially
valuable to Fanfare Books. Working in
cooperation with owner Ellen Stafford, her
participation will permit more attention to
be paid to many promotional activities and
community services that have had to be
postponed for lack of time and energy. A
regular bookletter, compilation of booklists
covering various categories for interested
groups or individuals. children's story -
times, exhibits and talks at local events are
some of the projects planned.
Fanfare Books was established in 1967
and over the years has become a popular
place to visit in Stratford during the busy
summer season. The shop, open all year
round, is housed in an old Victorian house
overlooking the Avon on Waterloo Sotith in
Stratford.
SO YOU WANT TO BE A PLAYWRIGHT
All those would-be playwrights dream-
ing of seeing their creations come to life on
stage will have a chance to try their wings
in the next year. Theatre Ontario is staging'
what it calls the largest playwrighting
competition ever held in Canada. Six prizes
of $5000 will be given out to the winning
plays submitted before the deadline of
Sept. 1. 1979.
The winning playwrights will work with
professional directors, designers and
actors to polish each work for a production
in the authors' home regions. Later all six
shows will be presented in a week-long
festival at Hart House in Toronto in Nov.
1980.
Scripts must be submitted anonymously
with an envelope enclosed containing an
identifying application form. Applications
may be obtained from Theatre Ontario. 8

CULTURAL CENTRE FOR GODERICH
DISCUSSED AGAIN
One of the most recurrent schemes and
dreams in Goderich in the past decade has
been the idea of a proper cultural centre for
the town.
The topic came up again recently when
town councillor Elsa Haydon Spoke out of
the need for such a facility and suggested a
major expansion of McKay Hall, the
current home of the Goderich Little
Theatre. The discussion was prompted by a
proposal by the theatre group to spend
$40,000 of its own money to improve the
current building. Mrs. Haydon felt instead
it would be better to undertake a major
expansion that would turn the current 200
seat building into one seating 500 persons.
Ideally, she said, the building would also
include an art gallery but she felt it was
only economically feasible to cater to the
performing arts at this time.
The councillor said she had discussed
the idea with members of the dormant local
arts council and they agreed with her
