Climbing over the frame wasn't too hard a task but i was
barely over the other side and on the mattress %:hen I
remembered that 1 get terribly seasick at the least feeling of
motion and believe me. there was motion! Ever lov:er...lbs. onto
a v.ater bed. turn. gist. and adjust for comfort? You wouldn't
believe the motion! The sinking of the Titanic didn't produce as
many v:aves as me lowering my pleasingly plump (remember?)
self onto the ill-fated water bed.
What a situation to be in...a queasy stomach and not a soda
cracker in sight...two grandchildren who would now: probably
awaken (ever see it fail?)...my sudden awareness that -the weight
of my body had displaced and I do mean displaced. enough v: ater
so that I had sunk v.-ell in. making the frame around the bed look.
from my prone position. like a 6 ft. fence. How to climb over?
I could just barely see Babbi and Fergus' faces peering at me
from their resting positions on the floor at the foot end of the
bed. Diddetect a look of challenge in their canine eves. or was
it simply a we knew you'd be sorry you ever got in" look?
Whatever. I decided to ignore them and try to get out. Surely
there must be a way or was there?
I turned. facing the side of the bed and immediately had a
vision of waves v: ashine me to shore. which in this case was the
frame. I wasn't to be disappointed. The sudden movement
pushed me right up against it. Two pairs of eyes noted my
progress (was I progressing or .was I going to be lodged between
the mattress and the frame?) They waited. peering in the near
dark. Did`I, detect a note of contempt? I'd show them! I swung
my legs over the side and sat up. Pain. intense pain!'! The frame
was pressing into the inside back of my knees while my posterior
was sinking deeper into the brink. I turned and using my 10
fingers as levers. I pressed into the mattress. hoping to elevate
myself into a half-standing position from which my feet would
finally hit the floor. but no luck. The pain in the back of my knees
was now getting excrutiating. A sudden brainwave made me
reach for a pillow to tuck under my legs. between them and the
