Second only to tool making, spinning,
weaving and nature dying are the oldest
handicrafts known to mankind. From
earliest times all woven fabric construction
has been based on the system of tightly
stretching a parallel series of threads
(warp) and then passing loose threads (the
weft) over and under the stretched threads
at right angles.
Today these ancient crafts are undergo-
ing a resurgence in interest with a new
generation of weavers and spinners helped
along by guilds like one recently organized
in the area.
The earliest examples of woven cloth
may be 10.000 year-old linen unearthed in
