wanted something special to give as a wedding gift she had had
to drive to London so she felt a shop offering these kinds of gifts
was needed in Exeter. Now she says. she tries`To carry exclusive
things in the right price range.
People are so much more aware of things that go into their
houses today, Margaret says. She feels some of this may be due
to colour television and the abundance of beautiful room settings
that are shown there. Many of her customers are young people
and they love anything that's wood, she says. Pine things are
particularly popular.
One of the trends today is to wood in the bathroom including
wooden towel racks and the return of wooden toilet seats. In fact,
she says, she carries more wooden towel racks than fancy ones.
When the shop was originally started it was to be run by
Margaret with George going out to find other work. Work wasn't
so easy to find however for a man inching toward retirement age
and the shop was doing quite well so gradually George began to
take more and more hand in helping run the shop. Today the
couple works full time in the shop and Margaret says she enjoys
working with her husband very much. It's a pleasure to be
around him for a change, she says after being apart much of their
married years, first due to the war and later due to his sales job
that kept him on the road a lot.
For his part, it's quite a change from engineering to shower
curtains and kitchen accessories but George is enjoying his new
life very much. The shop he feels is quite successful although he
admits the couple is able to get along in it because they don't
have any great need for a high income at their time of life and
they do nearly all their work themselves.
One of George's jobs is travelling to Toronto to directly pick up
