The recycling of old things has led to not only new uses for old
buildings and old artifacts at the Benmiller development, but
also reusing some of the old machinery. Both mills were
originally water powered. With the help of Heinz Peper of Baden
the old penstocks from the mill were hooked up to two 1910
Barber turbines and produce enough power to heat the indoor
swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool at the River Mill and
altogether the power savings add up to S700-800 a month, Mr.
Gowers says. It's paying back the cost of the machinery very
quickly. The savings have been so impressive that the
management is considering using the old water power set up at
the woollen mill as well to generate electricity. Mr. Peper is also
at work on a solar energy plant.
