Village Squire, 1978-10, Page 27PEOPLE Inside nearly every newspaper reporter is a novelist or playwright just longing to get out. The beast inside has escaped for one London Free Press reporter, Joan Barfoot. Her first novel Abra, is about a woman who escapes from the humdrum life of marriage and kids and heads north to buy a cabin and live alone and free. The book has been well received by critics across the country. Another Free Press writer has taken a step out of his normal field. Entertainment writer Mike Mulhern has recently had an album of his music released and the tables were turned on him when the Free Press sent out the album to various performers in the music field and asked for comments. It was their chance to get back at a critic but in general, the comments were favourable. Speaking of the journalistic profession, a large void has been left in Mitchell with the retirement of Mrs. Wanda Mounteer from the staff of the Mitchell Advocate. Mrs. Mounteer and her husband operated the paper for many years beginning in 1933 and ending when she sold the newspaper to the Signal -Star chain from Goderich in 1976. She remained on as editor of the paper until Aug. 12when she retired. Mitchell town council set aside its regular business one night last month to honour her for her 45 years of service to the community. She was presented with a dozen red roses and a town plaque commemorating her service and was given a seat at the council table which councillors said was only fitting after 45 yeJrs of covering council meetings. "Killer" Bell has decided to call it quits. Connie as she prefers to be known, took part last month in the world arm wrestling championships in Kansas City and finished third. Mrs. Bell of RR 2. St. Pauls said it just isn't fun anymore. If she keeps her promise to quit it will have been a short career. She only took up the sport in June at the Shakespeare Field Day then won the Canadian Championship in Toronto in ,August. She says she wants to save her ,arm for her real love: baseball. Being queen is something of the old hat for Jo -Anne Palmer of London and formerly of Clinton but she recently took on a new crown. Miss Palmer. 22, daughter of the Clinton dentist and his wife. Dr. and Mrs. D.B. Palmer. was crowned Fairest of the Fair at the Western Fair in London September 7 picking up a $400 wardrobe and an all expenses paid trip to Florida for two. a charm bracelet and flowers. In 1975 she was the Centennial Queen in her home town for its 100th birthday and the following year was Miss Teen Dominion of Canada and placed fourth in the Mis: Dominion of Canada competition. Next year she'll represent the Western Fair in competing for the Sweetheart of the Fair title at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. That trip to Florida is a nice prize but it won't be exceptional for Miss Palmer. Though she's a first year studept in sociology at the University of Western' Ontario now, she was formerly an airline stewardess. So you want something special in a new car. something you're sure your neighbour isn't going to have a twin of. Well if you've got S50,000 to spare Bob Hamanther of Zurich and Eric Kints of Exeter just might have the answer. The pair was recently appointed sole Ontario dealership for the Cadillac Seville Opera Coupe manufactur- ed by the Grandeur Motor Car Corporation of Pompano Beach. Florida. That company takes ordinary Cadillac Sevilles selling at a paltry $15.000 and tebuilds them. The chassis has been shortened, the engine moved back and a body that is fiberglass to the rear wheels has been installed. Only 200 of the cars will be manufactured, Mr. Kints says. So. unless your neighbour also has $50.000 to throw around,, you can be sure one won't turn up in his driveway. 0 G(OERICH RECORDS & TAPES CENTRE HOME & CAR STEREO CB RADIOS 524-4466 SUNCOAST MALL, GODERICH, ONl Records & Tapes [Cassette & 8 Track] Largest selection in the area.
