Village Squire, 1978-10, Page 22Canadian music business. "Sometimes I
feel like I should be in the heart of the
city," he says, but with a good manager
working for him in Toronto he doesn't
really have to be. If not for the manager, he
says, he'd be shut off from the rest of the
industry but with a manager plugging
away getting him work, he can carry on his
double life of farmer and musician.
One of the disappointing things for him
however has been the fact that he hasn't
had a lot of exposure in his own home
territory. None of his musicians come from
the local area (all are from the city) and so
Kitchener has become a convenient
meeting place and is more or less home
base musically. He'd like to work more
locally, however and will get at least a
couple of chances in the next few months.
Recently he played in Formosa and on
October 29 will take part in a concert at
Memorial Hall, Blyth which will later be
rebroadcast on CKNX FM. On November
17 he'll be the opening act for a concert by
The Good Brothers at the Coliseum,
something he's looking forward to since he
and the blue grass band members are good
friends.
Strangely, while he hasn't had much
exposure in his own back yard, he has won
recognition in far away Sweden. Last
December he visited Sweden for a second
time to do concerts at the Stockholm
Cultural Centre and at several clubs. The
concerts were set up by his Swedish
connection Anne Lundequist Burchill. his
wife. On his earlier trip he had spent a
longer period in Sweden and drew enough
attention that he was interviewed on
national media and played many good
clubs. It was quite a feeling to play some of
the old 16th and 17th century clubs
complete with brick ceilings, he says. He
was so successful that he feels he could go
back to Sweden and work full time but he
finds his lack of knowledge of Swedish puts
a strain on the performances and that his
rightful place is here in North America.
And that rightful place is on the farm
near Dublin where he can grow crops in
summer and sing songs by winter and live
the best of two diverse careers. ❑
