Next in the operation is the uncapping machine, a machine
that cuts the'v:ax tops of the cells and lets the honey tiny.' out.
The supers are then stacked side by side in the extractor which is
a large centrifuge. When the machine is loaded and turned on
the spinning effect sucks out the honey.
In the Fear operation the honey is then pumped to large
storage tanks where it is strained to take out any of the w•ax that
might still be in it then stored.
Honey leaves the Fcar honey house in two ways. It may he
taken straight from the large holding tank into barrels for
shipment to lvholesalers or it may be pumped into smaller tanks
from which it will be packaged into small containers for sale from
the honey house or through local retail outlets.
Many beekeepers sell their honey directly to wholesalers and
don't bother with local sales but°the Fears have a large business
selling both to customers at the door and to outlets. One day each
v:eek is spent on the road for Mrs. Fear travelling to service
stores in places such as Teesv.ater and northward. Listowel.
Brussels. Blyth. Lucknow and points round about. In addition a
good deal of honey is delivered to St. Jacobs for sale at the
Waterloo market.
There are surprisingly•. a large number of beekeepers in
Western Ontario. often six or seven in and around one particular
torn. They make use in various ways of local sales. Some
advertise widely but the Fears spend little 00 advertising. They
depend on word of mouth to bring in the customers. They sell the
product and hope people v. -ill like it and tell their friends. They
have no trouble selling all theycan produce so feel no pressure to
push sales. Mrs. Fear says. She says some people say they
should move from their out of the way location to somewhere on
a high: ay but she feels if people arc interested they'll find their
y:ay.
Although they make very little effort to promote heavily the
fears still get involved in public relations programs. They. are
