clothing in one style. People could all be
driving black cars. Everything would be
drab and colourless. But people feel the
need to enrich their lives enough to want
colourful clothing, cars, even fancy labels
on packages and Arie wishes they'd go a
little further and begin to put the finer
things into their life.
"The world needs lots of practical
people," he says, "but even practical
people can enrich their lives with the
higher things." He cites modern home
decorating as an example. Many people
spend all kinds of money on floor
coverings, wall coverings, furniture and
other things yet something is still missing.
The addition of a good painting may be
exactly what is needed to make the home
special.
While he worries about the financial well
being of artists in general, Arie has no
complaints for himself. He doesn't really
have to sell his paintings, he says. With
most of his children grown up, with his

comfortaty. Because of this he never feels
he has to push people into buying his
works. He has a great deal of himself
invested in his work, he says, and he's not
in that big of a hurry to sell it to push it on
someone. He likes looking at his own work
and likes to sit in his studio surrounded by
it.
He says there is no problem coming up
with subjects for his work. They are all
around him. He also travels a good deal
and gets a variety of subjects. He went
south in the spring and also travelled in
New York state, coming back with
inspiration for more work.
Painting, Arie says, is 90 per cent
memory and 10 per cent observation. The
subject must first be experienced. he says.
He may, for instance, see a scene with a
fence gate and a tree and think it would
make a good painting. But almost never is
that tree in the right place to properly
balance the painting. In addition. the
leaves and branches of the tree may not be
just how he would like them to be. Memory
then comes into play. The artist must
remember thousands of trees he has seen
in his lifetime. the types of trees and the
characteristics of each type. In this way,
the artist can get the effect most needed to
convey the message of his painting. Unlike
the photograph which records only what is
there, the painting represents the scene.
Everything that detracts from the mood or
message of the painting must be
