programs. Tent 2 will be devoted to horticulture and will provide
many demonstrations or flower arranging and gardening tips.
The building will include crafts with 25-30 crafters, displaying
and selling jewellery, leathercrafts, ceramics, oil painting,
basketry, apple dolls, weaving and other products. Also on
display will be quilts made to celebrate the plowing match by
Huron County quitters.
One thing that is not mentioned around the hundreds of people
from across the county who have worked for years in planning for
the event is the word "rain". Everyone in Huron is trying to drop
that word from the vocabulary until at least October. The last
time Huron hosted the big event in 1966 at Seaforth, the rains
came down and the results were legendary. The farm fields when
drenched with water just couldn't stand up to the heavy use they
got when the match is held. The site was a sea of mud.
As it to make sure they didn't forget the scene, the
weatherman dumped the same kind of conditions on Kingston
last year and made the event if anything, even worse than the
1966 Seaforth fiasco. One of the reasons Huron went after the
1978 match was to try to make people across the province stop
talking about the 1966 mess.
They have a good example to follow, of course. In 1976 when
the match was held in Bruce the wet weather that had plagued
the county in early September suddenly broke and it came in hot
and dry for the week of the plowing match, so dry in fact that
they had to water the streets to keep down the dust.
The folks working for the 1978 International in Wingham
wouldn't mind that problem at all.
