Village Squire, 1978-08, Page 38SQUIRE'S TABLE A pause that refreshes on a summer day - a stop at Oakwood Inn Summer makes many people think of summer resorts and what more typical summer resort to think of than the granddaddy of them all, Grand Bend. Dining too tends to be part of a day by the water -and in Grand Bend for many that cleans a visit to Oakwood Inn overlooking 1 ake Huron on one side and the greens and airways of the Oakwood Golf Club. Many places work hard to come up with an artificial nostalic atmosphere of days gone by but at Oakwood, it comes naturally. The Inn is made of logs that give it a feeling not so much of pioneer days, but of an earlier era of summer resorts. This feeling is supported by the furniture, most of it the hand -made kind from tree branches with lumpy knots/here apd there and covered on the seats with a printed cloth one expects to see aslcurta6is in cottages furnished about 1950. If that sounds tacky, it isn't really. Somehow at Oakwood it has a pleasant feeling that seems to fit. A visit for supper on a recent scorcher of a July day proved the 50 -year-old Inn to have just the right feeling for a summer night's meal out. A table by the window overlooking the golf course through the overhanging trees was pleasant, though the lack of rain had browned the grass so that it wasn't as refreshing to look at as usual. The menu provided a nice variety of steaks and seafood and surf and turf combination but we passed right over these to go down to the salad plates and chose a combination salad plate. It proved to be a popular item as several people at neighbouring tables also felt it was the ideal meal for such an evening. The platter was huge, offering roast beef, ham, turkey, chicken, deviled eggs and cottage cheese on a bed of lettuce along with a small salad and a choice of dressing. It proved to be a tall order to finish it. Still, determined to at least sample the CAtiNAtiDi. see what forest fires can do to Canada! AAA we cant afford to be careless dessert menu. we pushed on for a piece of pie. Both the lemon meringue and the apple were advertised as home made but we chose the apple. It didn't quite measure up to what this writer's idea of home-made apple pie should be but it was tasty never the less. Service was friendly and for the most part efficient though with a rain storm sweeping in over the lake and with the car windows left open in the parking lot, it seemed to take an interminable amount of time for the waitress to deliver the cheque and then process the credit card. She finally made it just as the first rain drops were starting to fall. In all it was an enjoyable summer evening experience. DINING INFORMATION The listings provided are a service to our readers.
